STATE OF INDIANA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Representative Thames L. Mauzv IO2S Country Club Lane Warsaw. IN 4esso My congratulations to Syracuse on their Sesquicentennial Celebration. The citizens and business community have done an outstanding job in promoting their city as a wonderful place to live, by capitalizing on the Wawasee and Syracuse lake areas, which give Syracuse an enviable reputation throughout Indians and the Midwest. Sincerely, — Representative Thames Mauzy /

WPOA: Dedicated to preservation

By BILL SPURGEON Formed at mid-century and dedicated to the preservation and orderly development of Lake Wawasee and service to its membership, the Wawasee Property Owners Association, Inc., has a long list of accomplishments to its credit. In its early years, the association successfully sought revision and updating of Indiana’s boating laws. Leadership was provided in planning and zoning, upgrading utility services (including telephone, electricity, and natural gas), establishment of a full-time emergency dispatching center in Syracuse for all of Turkey Creek Township, support of a professional lake patrol force, upgraded highways and fire protection, and continued maintenance of water quality. The 1971 study of water quality of Lakes Wawasee and Syracuse was a landmark program, and monitoring continues to assure that these lakes will be safe and pleasant places to enjoy fishing, swimming, and water sports. Efforts in the mid-1950s led to a local zoning ordinance, now supplanted by county-wide zoning that came along some 20 years later. The association seeks fair enforcement of zoning laws and regulations. The association led the way in establishing a fire station in the eastern part of Turkey Creek Township. The association works with governmental bodies and agencies at all levels: local, state, and

federal. It conveys to these agencies and officials the deep interest in, and affection for, that Wawasee residents have for this remarkable natural resource and the area that surrounds it. Association concerns in the mid-1980s include: — The former fish hatchery site. The association works with appropriate officials in state government on a continual basis to assure that development of this location is consistent with the area in which it is located and with the capacity of the lake itself to handle additional traffic which it may generate, both on the lake and on adjoining roads and highways. It also is monitoring the area esthetically; the association does not wish it to become unappealing. — Sanitary conditions. The association supports the efforts of the Turkey Creek Township Regional Sewer District to provide adequate sewage disposal (collection and treatment) facilities for those areas which need them. It also supports efforts to keep all sewage and refuse out of the waters of the lake and — Water level. Regulation of the water level depends on natural conditions, plus the ability of Turkey Creek to carry adequate run-off. In times of heavy rains and/or thaws, the creek cannot handle the run-off. The association supports efforts to increase the run-off-carrying capacity of the creek without drastically changing its course or waterway.

— 911 Emergency Calling. The association is supporting the efforts of the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce to establish a centralized emergency 911 calling system for Turkey Creek Township, to be headquartered in Syracuse. The association is guided by a board of directors, elected by the membership. The board, in turn, elects its officers, which include a salaried executive director who also serves as secretarytreasurer. Social functions include a pancake breakfast for members and invited guests at th beginning of the season and, in connection with the annual membership meeting the first Friday in August, an annual dinner. Heart of Lakes Square Dance Club now in Syracuse The Heart of Lakes Square Dance Club is one of Syracuse’ best kept secrets. It was formed in North Webster over AVz years ago by Charlie and Sharon Stuckman and caller Jerry Davidson and his wife Linda. The club moved to Syracuse in the fall of 1985, where most of its members live. Dances are held at Syracuse Middle School on the second and fourth Fridays of each month, September through May. Guests are always welcome. Butch and Jackie Plikerd head the fun-loving group this year.
