Syracuse Wawasee Chamber The Syracuse-Wajasee Chamber of Commera was established over 50 years ago to promote the economic growth and well-being of commerce and industry in the area. As times have changed, so have the desires and needs of the community. The primary objective of the chamber, however, remains the same, to make the SyracuseWawasee area a desirable place in which to live, work, play and shop. The chamber of commerce continues to support the economic development of one of the most beautiful areas in the State of Indiana without having a negative impact on the environment. The chamber has the unique opportunity of promoting this community's many business and industrial opportunities to a wide and varied seasonal population. For over 100 years many of the midwest’s most successful business and industrial personalities have been seasonal residents beautiful Syracuse and Wawasee Lakes. The Retail Merchants Division of the chamber of commerce was formed in 1979. Joyce Selvey served as president for the first three years as this group worked to coordinate activities to promote retail business in Syracuse. Sidewalk days and other events were arranged to help serve retailers both uptown and in Wawasee Village. «• The current president of the chamber of commerce, just elected, is Jeanne Gardiner. Mjke Skevington is the current president of the Retail Marchants Division. Donna Conder will become president of this division Julyl. Jim Evans, immediate past president of the chamber of commerce said a tremendous amount of work has been done by chamber members and other residents and businesses to make the upcoming Sesquicentennial celebration a memorable experience for all. "1 am pleased at the great amount of cooperation the chamber and the Sesquicentennial committees have received from the citizens of the Syracuse area,” he concluded.

Fire department has long history
The Syracuse Fire Department has a long history of being ready to quickly serve area residents and businesses when their lives and property are threatened by fire or other calamity. Bill Pipp, who brought his wife, Eleanor, to Syracuse in 1952, joined The department in 1952 and served the department for the following 28 years. He said the fire station was located on Main Street beside the Pickwick

Theater until it burned in 1959. It was then located on the west side of South Huntington Street for a time and then into the original portion of its present building in 1960 or 1961. Pipp, who also drove the EMS ambulance for 15 years, said, “The department has progressed pretty well, I’d say. That’s what it’s all about, getting to a trouble spot quickly and knowing what to do when you arrive.”
