Turkey Creek was organized in 1838

Turkey Creek was organized as a township on June 29, 1836, and before 1838 comprised the ter-

ritory which afterward formed the townships of Van Buren, Jefferson, and Scott. The township abounds with lakes, some of which are more than 100 feet deep. Syracuse Lake, one mile long and threefourths of a mile wide, lies directly east of the Syracusetand what was first called Nine Mile Lake, now Wawasee Lake, is also in the township. Henry Ward and Samuel Crosson were the first settlers in 1832. They constructed a dam across Turkey Creek intending to erect a mifi as soon as the lands were open for settlement. In 1833, the mill was completed and Ward and Crosson erected a sawmill in 1936. The township is bounded on the north by Elkhart County, east by Noble County, south by Tippecanoe, and west by Van Buren Township. Before its organization in 1836, a number of families had settled inside its boundaries, among whom were the families of John C. and Patrick Johnson, William Cassidy, Andrew Guy Robert Warner and others, all o'f\ whom came in 1834. '■ Settlements from this date were made rapidly. In 1836, Crosson built a log house and opened a stock of general merchandise. This store occupied the site of the Lake House in Syracuse which was built in 1853 by Jacob Renfro. Crosson, being one of the first settlers and a man possessing both means and enterprise, was a

prominent factor in the community. He donated one acre of ground in 1836 west of Syracuse for a cemetery and the remains of a son of Harvey Veniman were buried the same year. A log school house was built that same year on the hill at Syracuse and school was taught during the winter. In 1837, settlers living in the more remote part of the township, transformed an old log barn into a fairly comfortable school. It was built upon the land first occupied by Timothy Mote. The first religious organization to build a church were Baptists. In 1843, Rev. James Martin organized a class and a few years later a church was erected at Syracuse. The church, after a few years of prosperity, was disorganized and the building sold to the German Reformed congregation. In 1851, a German Baptist Church was organized in the south part of the township and in 1860, the society built a church on section 14. George P. Rothenbarger and Conrad Brumbaugh were the first pastors. A Church of God was organized east of Nine-Mile Lake in 1858 by Rev. George Thomas. A union church was built on the farm of N. Crow on section 14 in 1860 and various denominations used it for religious worship. The United Brethren and Evangelical Association also organized churches in the township with regular services.
