CSX train at sesquicentennial
The CSX (ex-Chessie) Operation Lifesaver Exhibit Car, as well as the CSX Theater Car will be in Syracuse for the Sesquicentennial Celebration Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 12. The display will be at the old train depot on Medusa Street. There is also a possibility of an engine and caboose being available for tours. Tentative times for touring the train have been set and are as follows: July 3, 4-9 p.m.; July 4, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; July 5, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; July 6-9, 4-9 p.m., July 10, 3-9 p.m., and July 11,9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Chessie “Operation Lifesaver” Exhibit Car began life as U.S. Army Hospital Car No. 89533 in 1953, but waited over a quarter-century to go into action saving lives. But that’s exactly what it’s doing now as a rolling museum and exhibit center. Designed by the company’s visual communications professionals, the museum-on-wheels uses scale models, four huge panels of graphics and an elaborate 24-foot dibrama to outline a comprehensive safety message. The car’s central diorama is a detailed representation of one of the fatal gradecrossing collisions that have occurred on railroad tracks in recent years. Modeled in “HO”
