Five runners advance to Olympic track meet

. WEST LAFAYETTE - Five Syracuse-area runners qualified), for the Region 7 Junior Olympic \ tracK meet with impressive ' showings at Indiana’s Junior Olympic track and field meet at Purdue University Saturday, June 20. Scott Wheat qualified in the 13-14 age classification in two separate events. Wheat placed third in the 3000 meter run with a 12:03 time. He also placed third in the 1500 meter run, finishing in 5:34. Meanwhile, Jim Wheat finished second in the 9-10 boys’ 200 meter run. He finished in 35:05. Conroy honored at Volleyball camp

SYRACUSE — Wawasee’s Amy Conroy was honored at Manchester College’s girls’ volleyball camp. Conroy, in one of the most heralded volleyhafT camps around, was named the best all-around athlete. \

under bpys’ classification, won the 100 [meter run with a 20.9 \ time. He later placed fourth in run with his 44.91 docking. Also advancing to the national meet is Alyson Mills. She won the 100 meters run with a 17.01 time, ? then came back with victories in the 800 meters and 1500 meters. The final area runner advancing to the meet in Sterling, Hl., is Justin Daugherty. Daugherty, in the 9-10 boys’ group, placed second in the 1500 meter with a 6:17 time, third in the 800 meter (2:58), and seventh in the 100 meters. The Region 7 competition will be held Sunday, July 12, in Sterling- .

Conroy participated in the camp, which lasted from Saturday, June 13 until Wednesday, June 17. Players from all over the, stqte attended the camp, which waV directed by Ball State University’s volleyball staff.

Ladies' golf

SYRACUSE — Maxwelton Golf Club hosted its annual memberguest Friday, June 19, and Saturday, June 20. Thirty-three two man teams competed in the twoday event. Friday’s round was followed by a putting and chipping contest. The putting contest was won by Don Patrick, guest of Doug Vanette, both of Ligonier. The chipping contest award went to Jerry Johnson, Syracuse. The tournament concluded Saturday evening with a dinner for the participants and their guests. An awards ceremony followed the meal. First place awards went to Louie Slabach and guest Craig Miller, both of Ligonier. Second was awarded to Terry Skaggs, Syracuse, and Gene Roe, In-

dianapolis. Tom Richmond and Brent Nettrour, both of Nappanee, won third place honors, while Tom Conner, Ligonier, and John Ray, South Bend placed fourth. John Kroh and Mike Kiley, both of Syracuse, won fifth place, and Daryl Crouthers and Larry Morman, both of Goshen, placed sixth. SYRACUSE — In league play at Milford’s Big Boulder, the 17th low gross and net went to Leatrice Rapp. Second low gross was taken by Bonnie Newman, and second low net by Janet Branden. Peg Custer, Newman, Elaine Weiss, and Jean Niles tied for low putts.

The South Shore ladies league game of the day was individual points Tuesday morning. Winning at the nine hole competition was Mary Sullivan. Ros Samet, Dorian Armstrong, and Ginny De Witt tied for second. In the 18-hole competition, Gloria Stoffel was the winner. Peg Bowland finished second, while Jan Maher and Evelyn Steffen tied for third. Low gross honors went to Donna Bevington, while Bowland had low net. Polly Knapp and Stoffel tied for low putts. Siler resigns Wawasee positions

SYRACUSE — After five years at Wawasee High School, Scott Siler has resigned his teaching and coaching responsibilities to accept a teaching position at Goshen High School. Siler turned his resignation into Wawasee administrators Tuesday afternoon. “This was a tough decision,’’ admitted Siler, who has coached varsity baseball for the last three years. “But it wasn’t because I was unhappy at Wawasee. The move is a family move. It is the best for our family. ” Siler, along with his wife, Pauline, and two month daughter, Angela, will move to the Goshen area. They presently reside in North Webster. During his stay at Wawasee, Siler served four years as head Moil-Journal Flotilla race set The 10th annual Mail-Journal Flotilla Road Race is expected to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, July 4, at Syracuse’s Lakeside Park. A custom T-shirt will be given to the first 225 runners registering for the 3.3, or 8 mile run. In addition, medals will be awarded to the first three position in each age group. have any extra-curricular responsibilities during the 1987-88 school year. /”**! would like to continue coaching,’’ said Siler. “But right now all of that is up in the air. Nothing has been decided at Goshen.” In resigning the Warrior baseball program, Siler leaves the varsity program in good shape. He started a freshman baseball team this year, and has several talented players returning. “There’s definitely some nice talent coming up,” added Siler, a 1982 Notre Dame graduate. “I’m sure whoever steps in will do a good job.” Goshen’s school board is expected to hire Siler at its July meeting.
