Synthetic fibers require special care
By MARIETTA F. HENRY Extension Home Economist
■ Since 1939, when nylon appeared on the scene, an array of synthetic fibers has from the test tubes of labs and found places in the lives of consumers. Consumers learned quickly that the test tube fibers required a different kind of care than 100 percent cotton. For example, u polyester is oleophilic or ,r oil loving.” That is, it has a high affinity for oily soils. “Ring around the collar” was not easily removed by the usual laundry procedures. The oil loving property of polyester and some of the other synthetics provided an opportunity for the laundry products industry to develop useful new money making products that would attack the problem of “ring around the collar.” Pretreatment products for treating oil soiled necklines and cuffs of synthetic fiber containing shirts and blouses made their debut and became a staple in essentially every household and commercial laundry. Recent fashion seasons have brought an increasing amount of 100 percent cotton back on the scene. And well established habits are hard to break! Those" highly effective pre-treatment products got applied to the grimy necklines of the 100 percent cottons, as well as to the necklines of the synthetics and their blends. To the surprise and chagrin of the consumer conditioned to expect miracles, faded splotches were now very much in evidence on areas of some of the 100 percent cotton garments where the pretreatment product had been applied. Why was this happening? The pre-treatment products commonly contain a grease solvent to dissolve the body oils of “ring around the collar” and other oily soils. Unfortunately, some of the dyes used on 100 percent cotton fabrics are not colorfast to a mix of grease solvent (pre-treatment product) and water (laundry
bath). The directions for use of pretreatment products commonly advise the consumer to spray the soiled area, allow a few minutes for the product to work, and proceed with the recommended wash cycle. The solvent on the pre-treated garment does not hav6 time to evaporate and the combination of solvent and water can cause a loss of color from the 100 percent cotton clothing dyed with the susceptible dye. Generally, since cotton does not have a strong love affair with oily soils, aggressive pretreatment of necklines and other heavily soiled areas may not be necessary. But, if you do have a strong urge to pre-treat, an application of concentrated liquid detergent, or a paste of a granular detergent, applied to the heavily soiled area of 100 per-, cent cotton garments, is generally a safe alternative measure.
Hook's have free safety belt info
Statistics show 45,000 people die each year from motor vehicle accidents, yetnearly half of them could have been Saved if they’d worn their safety belts. Safety belts are the simplest, most affordable and most effective way to save hundreds of lives and millions of dollars for everyone. In an effort to help promote safety belt usage, all Hook’s Drug Stores have free information for consumers. “Buckle Up” is a brochure that offers facts and tips about proper safety belt usage and its advantages. In addition, all Incliana Hook’s stores nave free bumper stickers promoting the new safety belt law which goes into effect July 1.
