Summer church events are a 'time for refreshing, renewal'

By CARLA GAFF Staff Writer

Summertime can be a very busy time, especially for those living in the lakes area who may tend to have extended overnight

Syracuse youngsters to learn at Marketplace A.D.

Many Syracuse area churches are combining their efforts this summer for a joint Vacation Bible School called Marketplace A.D. Try to imagine a small village in Palestine many years ago. Just as the synagogue is the center of spiritual life, the village well is the focal point of social and economic life. Even at this early hour the women and children have been to the well for their daily supply of water. The odor of baking bread is in the air, mixed with smells from the candy shop. One can hear the clang of tools at the metalworker’s shop and the nearby rasp of the carpenter’s saw. The potter and basket weaver are busily setting up their shops for the day. The villagers hurry at their chores, for they don’t want to miss the storyteller who is camped just outside of town. Others had heard the rumor that the teacher and miracle worker, the one called the Christ, is coming this way. This is the scene that participating Syracuse area churches hope to re-create for area children at Oakwood Park on August 6,7 and 8. They will take part in the activities of a traditional Jewish family, visiting the marketplace, working as apprentices and journeying in the storyteller’s caravan. This summer school experience for the children is being sponsored by the SyracuseWawasee Ministerial Association. The various churches and their representatives are Syracuse Church of God, Penny Plikerd; Lakeside Chapel, Karen Cox and Pam Rassi; Rock Church, Kim Kathary and Meredith Mignery; Calvary United Methodist Church, Diane Grothaus and Becky Thomas;

ticipate in the Boat-in, Oakwood and Epworth Forest services during the summer. “Our church number doesn’t actually fluctuate too much during the summer,” said Pastor Maish. “Though our people enjoy attending these summer events, and we don’t discourage them from it, we do get more temporary visitors during the summer. So it .pretty much evens out.” X Presently the church is in a building program, adding additional classrooms, and a fellowship hall which was stipulated ig the original church building plans. The construction will also be beneficial when the church starts having two services on Sunday mornings. “We have classes meeting in less than desirable places right now,” said Pasltor Maish who went oh to explain that classes are meeting in the organ alcove, on the balcony, in the choir room and in the hallway. ; But the lack of adequatespace has not stopped the church from moving forward and starting new programs. \ The church works in conjunc-

Summer boat-in underway

Summer boat-in services began this year at Oakwood Park on Lake Wawasee on Sunday, June 14. These popular services will be held every Sunday morning through September 6 from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Each Sunday a different music group will present gospel music through the powerful loudspeaker system by the pier at Oakwood Park beach. The boat-in services are planned and sponsored by member churches of the SyracuseWawasee Ministerial Association. Each year the summer program has had a new theme as association pastors have presented brief sermons on different Sundays. The theme this year is “Christ Is Risen.” Future sermon topics are: June 28, “A Clean Slate; ” July 5, “Thanks, Forefathers;” July 12, “Another Policy?;” July 19, “Pearly Gate Answers;” July 26, “Teach Me to Pray;” Aug. 2, “Answers for Week-enders;” Aug. 9, “Holy Joe;” Aug. 16, “Washed Out?;” Aug. 23, “Job Openings;” Aug. 30, “LifeExpec-

tion with the ministerial association and the community in two popular facets, one being the Mobile Meals program, and the other the LAFF adult education program. Within the confines of the church, there has also been a number of changes made including adding a children’s choir director and the starting of a Monday night Christian Study group and most recently a Christian Books Class. Additionally, Pastor Maish commented that in the near future the church would like to add two part-time staff people. One would be added for the purpose of working with new people, while the second one would be hired as a youth minister. He went on to explain, “We’ll be using the summer, in part to get ready to educate everyone as to why we’re going to add extra persons. We’ll be having a number of home gatherings in order to discuss this and to hear everyone’s ideas.” * However, Pastor Maish stated that the church folks won’t be so busy working with new programs that they can’t make a little time to enjoy some summer softball.

He stated that summer is, “a great time to be outside and enjoy the world God has given to us.” And, that’s what he intends to do.

Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. — Daniel 12:2.
