1# YEARS AGO, JUNE 22,1977 Big things are happening in North Webster this week. It’s Mermaid Festival time! A reception is being held at the Tippecanoe Country Club today in honor of Bruce Jenner, the 1976 King of Sports. This evening has been reserved for the youngsters with the Cutie Parade set to move out at 7 p.m. and the Cutie King and Queen contest slated for 8 p.m. Mrs. Ralph Bennett was hostess for the June 16 meeting of Backwater Friends Extension Homemakers Club. Edith Hoffert assisted the hostess and gave the meditation. Wanda Moser, vice president, opened the meeting. Nineteen young ladies are competing for the total of 1977 “Queen of Lakes,” during the Mermaid Festival, in progress, in North Webster. Plymouth anglers sweep contest The Third Annual United Telephone of Indiana Fishing Tournament was held recently at the Barbee Chain-of-Lakes. The contest, begun several years ago by United employees, started at 6 a m. and concluded at 2 p.m. Winners were determined by the total weight of the legal size fish caught. This year was a Plymouth sweep as all winners but one work sos United out of the company’s Northern Region/Plymouth office. First place went. to Rich Spencer and Jed Oakley; second place to Don Master and Jerry Bowman; and third place to George and Kathy Reents The largest fish of the day was caught by Warsaw’s Darrell Stearley.

20 YEARS AGO, JUNE 21,1967 Indiana’s Secretary of State Edgar D. Whitcomb will be this year’s grand marshal of the Mermaid Festival parade set for Saturday evening, June 24, at 5. The 22nd annual Mermaid Festival is currently underway in North Webster with the final touches being put on the plans of the gigantic two-hour .parade set for 5 Saturday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Royer left North Webster Friday morning, June 16, for Alberta, Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Fidler and Greg and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Paulus attended the IndianaKentucky Allstar basketball game Saturday in Indianapolis. It was Kentucky’s fifth win in a row. The score was 79 to 67. Also at the game'was coach Don Butts and wife Laura. 30 YEARS AGO. JUNE 27,1957 The North Webster community continues to grow and increase in its business and pleasure facilities. This year finds several projects in operation, such as the New Davis Drive-In, the Lake Trails Miniature Golf course, and the Whisler Sport Shop. Sometime in the not-too-distant future Webster will also have a jewelry store with all the necessary merchandise. The newly-built Gulf Oil Station is nearing completion and will soon be ready for occupancy. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Beezley and family of Blue Island, Illinois, spent the week end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Beezley. Mr. and Mrs. Ormel Kline attended a sales meeting at Fort Wayne Monday night, Mrs. Ruth Rothenberger and her daughter, Mrs. Craig Un-

Farm task force holds mini-seminar

“Improving Cash Flow” ws the first of a series of mini-farm seminars and workshops held at Ancilla Domini this summer and fall in response to suggestions made by those attending the March 17 farm seminar, “As Farmers Cry, Who is Listening?” The mini-seminar was held June 16 in the Catherine Kasper Home Auditorium in Donaldson. “Because quite a few indicated on their evaluations in March they needed help in spotting problems in farm operations, we felt this topic first,’>state<X>Ben Rudecki. Rudecki is one of a group of 25 farmers and clergy who have formed a farm task force since the initial seminar. It is this group which will be planning future programs. Those who were invited to participate in the June 16 meeting were Gary Brooks, Farmers

North Webster has a townowned beach. The project, started several weeks ago by the

State Bank of Wyatt; Lawrence Dorrell, Indiana Farmers Union; and Tom Welter, National Farmers Organization. Other programs are scheduled at Ancilla during the next few months. On July 13, the farm task force will host Susan Bright of Indiana Rural Crisis and John Cardwell of Citizens Against Coalition in an evening presentation dealing with upcoming federal farm legislation and the need for forming advocacy groups. By August, the task force hopes to have organized a meeting based on the general topic of “What every farmer should know when he meets his lender,” as well as a discussion of what is needed by farmers facing bankruptcy. At that time, farmers already in bankruptcy court will also share their stories.

Commercial club, and located at the foot of Lake street, was taken over by the town after a vote of the town board at its monthly meeting Monday night in the second floor room of the Gilbert building.

Another workshop is projected for the near future and will deal with the “how-to’s” of reentering the job market. Announcements of dates and times of these programs will be published in advance.
