1 987 Mermaid Festival to feature new activities
Somethings are hard to improve. For instance, it is hard to improve ice cream. The only thing that can help this favorite of many is by making new flavors. The same can be said about North Webster’s Mermaid Festival. Year-after-year, the Mermaid Festival is a huge success. However, it manages to improve everytime the festival rolls around for another year.
the PAPER — Tuesday, June 16,1987
The 1987 version of the Mermaid Festival, the 42nd annual, seems to have improved since last year. More activities, along with the usual, highlight the gala event. The festival, this year, begins Monday, June 22, and lasts until Saturday, June 27. Specials this year include Monday’s opening family night. This special event allows anyone the opportunity to ride with the purchasee of a band. The same special carries over to Wednesday’s Kids Day. From 12-noon to 5 p.m. student-age individuals are given another chance to ride all the rides, at a minimal cost. A Second Kids Day is planned on Saturday, the final day of the festival. Meanwhile, all rides are half-price for Thursday evening’s Merchants Night. Still, one of the main attractions to the Mermaid Festival is its Mermaid Festival Ball, held at Camelot Hall. The North Webster Lions Club hosts the event. The ball begins at 9 p.m., Friday, June 19. Throughout the week are several softball youth league tournaments — featuring play for boys and girls. Also, a 5000-meter run, sponsored by the Palace of Sports, will be held. Although the festival ball is a major attraction the first evening, perhaps the best attended event is the closing day parade.

The 4 p.m. parade is one of the finest parades in Indiana. Other activities on Saturday include a ski show on Webster Lake, Queen of Lakes Pageant at Camelot Hall, and the Tournament of Knights athletic competition at the school. In all, North Webster’s Mermaid Festival is the highlight of the year in this community. It is even more special this year, though, with the community celebrating its sesquicentennial. This Mermaid Festival will be hard to beat. Knight will not be in North Webster North Webster’s first choice for its 1987 King of Sports — Indiana University men’s basketball coach Bob Knight — will not make an appearance at this month’s Mermaid Festival. Knight, in a letter to the North Webster selection committee, informed them that he was too busy to attend, and too busy to accept the award. He urged members on the King of Sports committee to select another candidate. At press time, it was not known whether the committee accepted Knight’s denial for the award. Knight may be awarded the honor in absention.
