Where has the time gone?
WILLIAfyf D. FULMER Guest Feature Writer (EDITOR'S NOTE: Katy is written about the author's own daughter, inspired by conversations of another author with his children.) ■ “Where did yesterday go, Daddy?” Katy asked her father. . He was a bit startled by the question. His three-year-old had a knack for making puzzling inquiries. She held up another world for him to see through her eyes. It was a world he had largely forgotten many, many years ago. She tested him daily. Her questions covered a multitude of subjects and she was very insistant that he answer her seriously. If he teased her or tried to sway her from her chosen subject, she would poulf and prod him until he relented and told her what she wanted to know. Not that she was interested in facts or recognized fabrications. Her questions were a part of a game they’ had developed between them. A sort of storyworld explanation he

made up about the things she saw around her. He realized he did this as much for his own satisfaction as for her own. For the wonder reflected in her face when he explained that a rainbow was a magic bridge to heaven or that stars in the night sky were God’s lanterns. She accepted these things without question and her world was lovely and serene. All too soon she would learn to knqw reality, but for now he could give her the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus and all the fantasies passed down from father to child, as it had been throughout the ages. But this time he was at a loss. Not so much because an answer did not occur to him but because it aroused in him an almost unbearable sadness. Where, indeed, had yesterday gone? “Tell me, Daddy,” insisted fyHer father kissed her in tribute to her loveliness and innocence and pondered his reply. Katy unwound her arms from her father’s neck and, standing up in her lap, grasped both of his ears in her tiny fists, pulling his face around until they were eye to eye, and nose to nose. “Please tell me, Daddy, where did yesterday go?” Her father answered, “Katie, yesterday had to go home to have ins uinner and to take a bath and go to bed.” “Why, Daddy?” “So that in the morning he Just Say No Club to march in parade The North Webster Just Say No Club members are reminded to meet at Rusty Armor Bakery on Saturday, June 27, at 3 p.m. to march in the Mermaid Festival Parade. could get up early to meet tomorrow.” “Is tomorrow, Daddy, pretty like yesterday?” “Sometimes not so pretty, sometimes prettier. ’ ’ “Oh.” “Yes, Ka.ty.” “I'm glad, Daddy,” she smile at him. Sliding down off his lap she ran into the hallway. He sat there in the gathering darkness, paper unopened in his lap, thinking about all the yesterdays behind him and all the tomorrows lying ahead for his young daughter, until shortly he was brought back to reality by an insistent tugging on his pant’s leg. “Daddy, Daddy!” Leaning over he lifted his tiny dynamo off the floor and into his arms. “Katy!” “I am back,” she announced stoutly. “You ane back^.sweetheart.” He lifted her further until he could look into her face. She smiled and pinched his nose, then made a grab for his ears. He evaded her grasp, and kissed her. “You’re a funny daddy,” she giggled. He hugged her to him, savoring the moment, in the sobering realization that nothing lasts forever. Her face became serious reflecting his own. Then, with all the strength in her tiny body, she hugged him back, arms around his neck, her cheek next to his. ‘‘Daddy, you forgot something.” “What did I forget, Katy?” “You forgot to tell me where yesterday went.” “I did tell you, sweetheart, remember?” “Tell me again.” “A little later, Katy, when you’re ready for bed. I think your mother wants you now.” “You promise, Daddy?” "I promise, sweetheart.” “All right,” she said. She slid out of the chair and ran into the hall, her tiny legs propelling her away from yesterday, toward all of her tomorrows.
