EMTs to serve at Pan Am Games

Syracuse EMT’sMaryellen Morganthaler and Karen Weaver recently received word that they have been accepted to serve on the volunteer EMS crew assisting the Pan American Games. Syracuse Fire Chief Larry Hunter commented, “I’m just glad to see the girls get to participate in this. ’’ Both Morganthaler and Weaver are Syracuse residents and are certified Emergency Medical Technicians. They graduated at the same time from Goshen Educational Center and were certified in April of 1985. Profile Additionally, both received EMT instruction under Pat Gaume and serve on the Syracuse EMS. In order to be a Pan American Games volunteer all entrants must do the following: Complete a volunteer enrollment form; attend a 15-minute session with a Pan American Games interviewer and sign a contract, if ask to; attend orientation sessions in which persons will receive additional training; and experience the 1987 Pan American Games. The games have beenheld since 1951 in countries from Argentina to Canada, and in great cities like Caracas, Mexico City and Chicago This year all of the tradition of the games will come to the heartland of America, as all eyes are on Indiana and Indianapolis. The event is noted for attracting international attention, the kind of attention that has helped create .international sports stars. The roster from past Pan American Games reads like a Who’s Who of sports legends, and these two local personalities will be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime event. Morganthaler will start her hectic Pan Am schedule on June 8 and will continue through June 16. She will be attending 35 baseball games at Busch Stadium and the University of Indianapolis. Debra Schafer, Syracuse, a member of Wawasee Future Farmers of America, will be among 12 girls vying for the title of State Sweetheart, at the 58th Annual State FFA Convention June 16, at Purdue University. Miss Schafer will be representing District I. This year’s convention theme is “Indiana FFA — Achieving Excellence in Agriculture." During the convention there will be three keynote speakers including: Kevin Eblen, Creston, lowa, National FFA President; Scott McKain, Indianapolis, motivational and entertaining professional speaker; and ScOtt Mobile Meals drivers Volunteer drivers for Syracuse Mobile Meals have been scheduled for the week of June 15-19. Each of the speakers will be featured at respective sessions throughout the convention. 9 More than 1,500 blue-jacketed FFA members will attend the convention, which officially begins at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday, June 16,-find concludes at noon. Thursday, June 18. All general, sessions will be held in the Loeb Playhouse of Purdue University’s Stewart Center, with the exception of Wednesday night, June 47, which will be in the Elliott Hall of Music. Approximately 275 FFA members will be competing in 17 different leadership areas on Monday, June 16. The state winners in these leadership areas will be announced at the Wednesday morning session, June 18. The State FFA Sweetheart will b chosen during Monday’s activities, but the identity will reWalter Nyces celebrate their 44th anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Walter Nyce, r 1, Milford, recently celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. They enjoyed dinner in Elkhart. The couple was married June 9, 1943, in Warsaw by Rev. B. H. Truman. They are the parents of two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Crystal) Avery, Syracuse, and Vicky Nyce, Milford. They also have four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Nyce is retired from Buhrt Construction, Syracuse. Modern age Children are very smart these days: At 6 they know all the questions, and at 16 they know all the answers.

Additionally, she has recently volunteered her services at the Lakeland Day Care, and commented, “basically, I’m volunteering for v about everything.” She stated she became interested in becoming an EMT after her daughter had an accident and, “I had no idea what to do for her. So, two weeks after that I signed up for classes. ” Weaver, on the other hand, has always had an interest in the medical field, and is still interested in pursuing a career in nursing, someday. She worked as a pharmacy technician right out of high school for a year, and then joined the Army. She was stationed in Europe, and after her stint for Uncle Sam, she served as a travel guide in Switzerland, France and Germany. “I’m very active and enjoy fining all kinds of things,” explained Weaver. “I like spending time with my daughter Jennifer, and love all sports, especially cycling, swimming volleyball, and basketball.” And it’s certainly a good thing she enjoys basketball, because as a part of the Pan Am crew she will be sitting though 21 games'in eight days. She will start her tour of duty on August 9 and serve though August 16, with each day having a different schedule from the day before. < “ Weaver will also be spending time as part of the volunteer crew for the special Olympics this year. She stated, “I get satisfaction out of seeing people benefit from the help I've given them.” She concluded, “I would like to say I appreciate all the help I’ve gotten from everyone.” The tenth annual Pan American Games will officially begin the afternoon of August 8 with Opening Ceremonies. The lighting of the Pan American Torch and the parade of athletes, are two traditional facets of the event that herald the opening day. This celebration of opening the games will be the biggest show in the history of Indianapolis, in the tradition of Liberty Weekend and the Opening Ceremonies of the Los Angeles Olympic Games. The ceremony will include breathtaking aerial displays, a cast of more than 10,000 performers, singing and dancing, as a ceremonial salute to the athletes, the Americas and the friendship and solidarity of Hie Western Hemisphere.

“Teamwork Without Tears’” is the theme of the fourth annual professional church secretarypastor seminar to be presented by the Professional Church Secretary’s Association of Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan. The seminar will be held Wednesday, June 17, at the Elkhart Ramada Inn from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pat Hiler, executive secretary of First United Methodist Church of Grand Rapids, Mich., will provide leadership.
