North Webster Sesquicentennial committee announces events

Plans for the North Webster 1987 Sesquicentennial were announced by the Sesquicentennial Committee Tuesday night during their meeting at the Palace of Sports. Vice-chairman Ed Clayton explained that many of the Sesquicentennial events will be held during the Mermaid Festival. However, events that will be held prior to that time include; Mayor's Banquet on Saturday, June 13, kiddie tractor pull on Saturday, July'll, a fishing contest which will take place from Memorial Day till Labor Day and a rowboat contest sometime in July. Also a date will be set at a later time for the dedication of the North Webster Park. Additionally, the committee discussed the beard and mustache contest which is underway. The contest is being sponsored by the North Webster Chamber of Commerce. The actual contest will be held

AUGUST WEDDING — Mr. and Mrs. Michael A. Price, 600 Front St., Syracuse, announce the engagement and August 15 marriage of their daughter, Portia Elaine, to Douglas Scott Coe. The bridegroom-elect is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carey Coe, r 3, Kendallville. The bride-elect resides in Fort Wayne and is a 1982 graduate of Wawasee High School and 1986 graduate of Manchester College. She is employed with the Fort Wayne Community Schools as an elementary teacher. Her fiance is a Central Noble High School graduate and 1987 graduate of Manchester College with a degree in secondary education. The wedding will take place in Wawasee 'Heights Baptist Church, Syracuse.

The Calvary United Methodist Church Kitchen Band provided entertainment of music and 'corny” jokes at the Syracuse Business and Professional Women’s Club 50th Anniversary and Mother-Daughter Banquet Tuesday, May 5. Eagles present check to help with field improvements
Dale Neff of the Lakeland Eagles presented a check recently to the Wawasee Kiwanis Club. This money will be used by the Kiwanians in their improvement project of Memorial Field. The Eagles raised $218.62 through a special project last winter. Larry Martindale, vice president, and a member of the Youth Services Committee, accepted the check for the club.

Clayton also announced that an old display of lake area post cards can be seen at the Lake City Bank, and that Sesquicentennial banners are being worked on at this time. They will be placed in the town as soon as they are completed. Additional information concerning the North Webster Sesquicentennial will be announced through this paper as soon as it is available.

The meal was prepared by Verna Weaver. Carol Elder read a letter from Mamie Long and who had included a contribution to the club's scholarship fund. Poems entitled “A Mother’s Love”’ and “Just Another Day For Mom,” were read by Mrs. Bjella. The club’s “Andrew Sisters,” Gloria Hodler, Fredetta Money and Carol Elder, lipsynced to two of the Andrew Sisters’ songs, “Don’t Sit. Under The Apple Tree,” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy From Company G.” Members introduced their guest and several prizes were presented. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Bjella, Mrs. Elder and Mrs. Stetler.

'Hats' theme for family banquet
Mothers, daughters and several fathers were entertained by Mrs. Russell (Doris) Kurtz, Middlebury, with her program “Hats On, Ladies” at the annual mother-daughter party in St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, Syracuse. The annual party was on Wednesday, May 6. Mrs. Kurtz gave a program on styles, periods of styles and history of hats. Mrs. Robert (Lucille) Searfoss was mistress of ceremonies and introduced Mrs. Allen (Mary) Zerkel and daughter, Abby, who gave tributes to mothers and daughters. Mrs. Richard (Virginia) Ditmer led group singing. A salad bar meal was served. Table decorations featured miniature straw hats decorated by Mrs. Paul (Mary Jane) Laritz. These were awarded to those selected by judges as qualifying for a certain style, category or period hat. Mrs. Maude Jackson was the oldest member present and was also distinguished for having four generations of mothers and daughters present. They included herself; her daughter, Mrs. Jack Ridings; Mrs. Riding’s daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Judy) Wagner; and Mrs. Wagner’s daughter, Mikki. Mrs. Merlin (Judy) Wolfe was the youngest mother. Both Mrs: Jackson and Mrs. Wolfe received large decorated straw hats from the main table decorations. Free child care The Wawasee High , Schpol Home Economics Department will be offering a free child care Service on Sunday. May 17, during Wawasee’s graduation service. The service is for all preschool age children, if the parents or friends attending the service, have difficulty in securing a baby sitter. The child care service will be in Rooms 116, 117 and 118 and parents are asked to bring a toy. possibly some food and instructions. The service will be available starting at 2:15 p.m. Kiwanians to hold BBQ The Kiwanis Club of North Webster will be sponsoring a Port-A-Pit carry-out chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 23, from 11 am. until 3p.m., in Augsburger’s Super Valu parking lot. All proceeds will go towards the club’s high school scholarship program.

OBSERVE 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY —Willard and Myrtle Richardson, Milford, will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday, May 24, from 2-5 p.m., at the Milford Christian Church., corner of Fourth and Henry Streets in Milford. Mr. Richardson and the former Myrtle Spears were married in Earle, Ark., May 8, 1937. Mr. Richardson is retired from Goshen Rubber and Mrs. Richardson, from Uniroyal fn Warsaw. They are the parents of eight children, Wayne, Bobby and Bill Richardson, both of Milford; Charles Richardson, Goshen; Joe Richardson, Lowell; Carolyn (Richardson) Nelson, Chessapeake, Va.; Patricia (Richardson) Whitt, Suffolk, Va.; Brenda (Richardson) Besson, Warsaw. The Richardsons also have 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The couple requests no gifts.
Library to be closed May 20
