A little boy grew to the age of three, but never uttered a word. His mother took him to all kinds of , doctors and he was pronounced healthy and mentally alert. One morning he startled his mother by screaming at the top of his lungs, “The eggs are terrible!” Overjoyed at hearing him say something, his mother hugged him and asked, “Why didn’t you say anything before?” “Because,” he answered, “up to now, the eggs were always good.” Sad, isn’t it, that we’re more prone to criticise than to compliment, to discourage than to encourage, to be gripey than to be

grateful. If we must condemn, let’s first condemn our own imperfections and inconsistencies; if we must destroy, let’s first destroy our own prejudice and prejudgment; if we must fight, let’s first fight our own faults and failures; if wo must kill, let’s first kill our own self-importance and scorn. The Living Bible says, “Stop being mean, badtempered and angry. Quarreling, harsh words, and dislike of others should have no place in your lives. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God has forgiven you because you belong to Christ. ”

John Bell responded eagerly when asked • how Christians should conduct themselves outside the church the rest of the week. “God has more desire for us to live a Christian life than we do,” he said. “Consequently, the burden of living a Christian life isn’t necessarily on us. The rest' of the week is the same as Sunday. We worship God, love God and obey God.” . “The rest of the week you are still in God’s.creation, a part of His world,” he continued. “If you're open to Him you'll receive guidance from Him. Remember, He has a greater interest in this than you do. As much as you want to live a good life, a moral life, a Christian' life, He has a far greater interest than you do.” The pastor likened it to a child tilling his parents he wants to do well in his studies this week. No matter how great his resolve, the parent is normally far more interested in his good grades than the child. Bell has been pastor at Clunette United Methodist Church since June, 1986. He also serves as pastor at Aldersgate Church in Atwood. He and his wife, Jennifer, and daughters Emily, five and Caitlin, two, reside at Hoffman Lake west of Atwood. He graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky., after having attended Goshen College. While in seminary he served two churches in southern Ohio. He said that God wants us to live a life in Christ evpry hour, every minute of every'uay; obeying God, loving Him and loving other people. “So the first step,” he said, “is that if a person wants to live a Christian life, he must realize he can t do it on his own

without God’s help.” He added that the paradox of Christianity is that if one wants to life a Christian life he must give his life over to Christ so Christ can live through him. The pastor likened our dependence on God to the diver on the oceaiwfloer who is breathing throtigh an air hose. ‘ l He can say he can hold his breath, but shortly if his air is blocked he will die. He can’t sur-Jdyfi-jyithout air being pumped to him. It’s the same with us. If we endeavor to live a Christian life we have to be receiving forgiveness, love and guidance from God. On our own there’s no way we can do it.” -A The pastor said thht what makes it difficult to life a Christian life is sometimes other people. He said you have to get to the point that you can abandon your life to God. Trust Him so much that when someone cuts you off on the highway, takes advantage of you in a business deal or blatantly lies to you that you trust God to handle the situation. Pastor Bell said that one should be in daily communication with God in quiet prayer. “With prayer, reading scripture, worship and Christian fellowship a person can become receptive to the love and guidance so freely offered from our Heavenly Father,” he concluded. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. 1. Who is the author Os the above verse? . 2. Where may a similar verse be found in the Old Testament? 3.
