The changing complexion of motherhood
By DEE JAYNES Staff Writer i “Mommies are people. People with children. Busy with children, And things that they do. There are a lot of things A lot of mommies can do. Some mommies are ranchers Or poetry makers Or doctors or teachers Or cleaners or bakers. Some mommies drive taxis Or sing on TV. _ / • Yes, mommies can be Almost anything they want to be.” These lyrics, written by Carol Hall for the ‘‘Free to Be You and Me” album by Mario Thomas, express the changing complexion of motherhood in America today. As. more and more women remain in the work force after beginning their families, the “working mom” is becoming the norm, rather than the exception it once was. Traditional roles are being reexamined as more and more women balance jobs and careers with the responsibilities of raising children. Despite growing social debate for and against mothers working outside the home, with the exception of those mothers whose income is vital to the economy of their families, the final decision is one that must be based upon individual circumstances. As Mother’s Day approaches, we decided to take a look at two successful young mothers and examine the reasons behind their choices. Rhonda Raber says she made a conscious decision to stay at

home with her children and added that she feels the decision of whether or not to combine a career with raising a family is a matter of individual choice. “You just weigh out what’s important to you and decide what’s best,” she said. “It’s an individual thing and each person has to make their own decision.” According to Rhonda, her own decision to stay at home was based partially upon “selfish” reasons.’ “I wanted to be there to see the changes my children experience first hand,” she said. “I also want to be with them to see that they are influenced in the ways Ron and I want them influenced. I want to enjoy all the fun that goes along with being a mom.” Rhonda is “mom’'’ to four young children: Brandi, eight; Nicole, six; Brittney, five; and Nathaniel, four. She" is one of five leaders of the Mother’s Club at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, a group of young mothers fro m the community who meet tw ice a month during the school year; a member of the church’s Missionary Council; ri and prayer chairman of the Missionaries in Training Circle at the church.

During this past Christmas season, Rhonda helped out a friend of her mother’s by working at the annual Hickory Farms store in Warsaw. “I found out for sure that I was not created to be a working mom!” Rhonda laughed. “During the first week I was working Brandi came down with the mumps. Nicole got the chicken pox the next week and two weeks later, the other three got them. I know that’s unusual, but it convinced me.” Rhonda is originally from the Milford area and graduated from Wawasee High School. Interested in art since junior high school, she also attended the Art Institute at IU-PUI in Ft. Wayne. -All through high school,” she explained, “I thought I was going to be an art teacher, but once I was at the Art Institute I decided on commercial art.” Although the time she has to spend on her craft is limited, Rhonda is presently 'doing cartoons and illustrations for books designed for use by Christian girls’ groups. She is working through Christian Education, a Winona Lake organization that does materials for Sunday Schools, youth groups and conferences. Rhonda says she doesn’t set aside a specific amount of time to work on the illustrations each day. “I just squeeze things in,” she said. “I set a deadline, but I usually finish just in time. That’s one of the things I enjoy about being able to do this work at home — the flexible hours.” Quite a , talented illustrator, Rhonda has used her talents to create greeting cards for friends and family. “On most of them,” she explained, “I made one original, had it copied, and then colored them all by hand. one-of-a-kind cards, I did all the work free hand ” In 1984, Rhonda%pplied for and received a copyright on a set of cartoon drawings she first began working on in high school. She hopes to one day use her ‘“Animal Life” series as part of a book or greeting card series. She says she has begun looking into the market, but hasn’t had time to fully develop the ideas. In the meantime, Rhonda com tinues to keep busy with her freelance illustrations and other related Work, which has included everything from lettering school buses to painting faces for children at a company picnic. “It’s fun and it is something that enables me to be at home with my children at a time when I think it’s important to be here.” When asked if she will pursue full or part-time employment outside her home after Brittney and Nathaniel are in school, Rhonda said no. “There will always be things that come up at school and home that I will want to be a part of,” she explained. “This arrangement works best for me ”
