Rochester trims Warriors

SYRACUSE - Wawasee’s bid for an undefeated Northern Lakes Conference boys’ baseball season was ruined Wednesday when Rochester trimmed the Warriors 4-2. Rochester spotted the Warriors a single run in the first inning, but the visitors came back with, a pair in the second. The Zebras pushed a single run across the plate in the third, - but the Warriors responded in the sixth. After Chris Yoder reached base on one of his two hits, Nathan Rhoades double the secondbaseman doubled Yoder home. ButWawasee’s game-tying rally fell short and Rochester claimed the win. Rochester scored an insurance run in its half of the seventh to protect the victory.

What does sports editor know?

Dear Editor, The comment by Mark Weinstein in the April is ismm concerning Steve Carlton left much to be desired. Mark’s prowess in the athletic department demonstrates how little he knows about the makeup of athletes, teams. When an older athlete is on the roster, the beginners realize that their best is not good enough. They are all wanting experience, this the older player has gone throughthis ‘striving to be good enough’ phase, so he knows the ‘knots in the stomach feeling? Maybe Steve won’t make it with some of these new clubs, that he will have the opportunity to play for, but the batters that he will face, has heard of him, and they respect his ability and that he is on the mound, for one purpose and that is to try and win the game As for. ing the big league managers, he doesn’t appear to be in that league either. He should know that it takes experience and ‘greeness’ to make and athletic team. The great Bob Feller once made the cryptic remark that still rings true, ‘maybe I am not as fast with a pitch as I was 20 years ago, but I can still throw it where they can’t hit it too well? Experience is one thing that cannot be bought, it must be earned. Steve Carlton has learned it well, as long as he is . on the opposing teams bench

Stookey’s second-inning blast erased a 7-4 Warrior deficit and propelled the hosts to the win. The Wawasee slugger clubbed a grand slam in the third, giving the Warriors a 13-7 advantage. Stookey finished with eight RBIs on the day. Shelly Bushong added three singles to Wawasee’s cause while Michelle Coy went the distance for her first high school win.

the batters want him to stay there. Respectfully, Arthur Chaney I didn't realize we had a Steve Carlton fan living in Kosciusko County. Obviously there’s at least one. Anyway, I appreciated Mr. Chaney's typed letter. It was informative and to the point. However, my viewpoint on Steve Carlton’s career is unchanged. I firmly believe, as many others do, that Carlton’s playing days are numbered. I do not care if he has all the experience in the world, he is washed up. . The ONLY reason Carlton is still pitching is that Cleveland, a possible contender in the American League East, needs pitching — desperately. Carlton's signing with the Indians is an obvious last-ditch effort by the Tribe to solve some of their pitching problems.
