tßy GLEN LONG Staff Writer Roderick V. (Rick) Smith, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Oswego, was asked recently to discuss how he and his church show love to the unsaved. He said .important is sharing the faith with others, friends, and strangers alike. j The pastor said that this year he has done some careful evaluation of the local church’s Christian outreach. In preaching through the Gospel of John, chapters four and five have struck him as especially meaningful in this area. “In reference to chapter five,” said the pastor, “for me to love the lost, I must come to a point where I know personally the love of Christ. In this chapter Jesus is talking about doing what the Father wants Him to do. You would expect Him to say it is because He loves God. But he really says, ‘lt is because He loves Me.’ Jesus was so filled with God’s love in his own life that He was able to share it with others.” Pastor Smith said he has to start at that point in his thinking. “What I say to the people in this church is that sometimes we don’t spend nearly enough time at Calvary," he stated. "We, assume our own salvation, we say we love the Lord and yet we tend to draw away from evangelism. A lot of the faintness of evangelism in individual believers is that they haven’t really sensed Christ’s love. “In chapter fourtirlEe Gospel of John wesWThat we have to follow Christ’s pattern. He is about the Father’s business no matter where that sends Him. He did not try to avoid people who might not be of His own group. Thus He even traveled through Samaria on His way to the northern Galilee region. ’’ “We in this church are very much ‘middle class Christians’,”

Outreach important to Oswego congregation

said the pastor. There are a lot of folks around us who are ‘upper class’ and ‘lower class’ financially. We tend to take detours around some of these people because we don’t feel comfortable with them.” Pastor Smith said,“ln my thinking, strategies and methodologies are important, blit if you’re about what the Lord wants you to do, in the natural everyday life He is going to bring »you into contact with people you can help redeem.” He said this changes somewhat from church to church. In his last church in Huntsville, Ala., his children were involved in summer sports programs. He did a lot of coaching and thus had the opportunity to share the gospel with men who were not Christians. He said that here in Oswego he has been concentrating on working through the congregation to reach others. , “If our folks don’t see service for the Lord in me, then they have no right to believe the message and I have ho right to be pastor,” said Pastor Smith. He added that one of the adult Sunday School members was encouraged

recently when the pastor told him he has more opportunity to witness one-on-one in his faith where he works than does his pastor. The pastor said that the-folks the Lord has gathered logether in the Calvary Baptist Church make up perhaps the most complete congregation he has known, He said it is very much a healing congregation that helps through prayer and support the problems other area people have. “To reach the lost we have to not expect them to show up in church. We must carry God’s love in our hearts into our neighborhoods and business contacts,” said Pastor Smith. “This is where the real work of evangelism is done. If righteousness is anything at all, it shines forth into the darkness. There is a ministry of prayer that needs to go on. I keep 1 a prayer list of people the Lord ‘ i has put on my heart and en- • courage our people to do the • same.” _ ■ “As rtell my people, ” he con- ’ eluded, “God goes by answered prayer and in the area of I reaching the lost that is certainly I true.”

OSWEGO PASTOR PREPARES SERMON — Roderick V. Smith, pastor of Calvary- Baptist Church in Oswego, paused from his sermon preparation to share his thoughts about the outreach of the local church. He feels that outreach should go on wherever Christians are in their everyday lives and that prayer is definitely a part of reaching others. (Photo by Glen Long)]-
