Consider ordinance — Nitrate contamination found in some areas of county
I By CARLA GAFF Staff Writer Due to nitrate contamination in some areas of the
county, a well water ordinance may soon be initiated to help regulate the depth and location of some residential wells. All residents in the county with high nitrates in their water have been notified, stated administrator-chief county sanitarian Jon Cupp during Wednesday’s county commissioners meeting. The areas affected include, Leesburg, Waubee Lake, Clunette and Burket. The nitrate problem exist where wells are too shallow (less than 50 foot). and where the pipes are one and a quarter inch It tends to be greater where wells are close to septic tanks, leach beds and certain agricultural operations. Though Cupp stated, "This isn’t a situation where you can point a finger to the exact cause. Ground water is not the kind of thing that can be caused by any one thing, there qfe a variety of possible factors involved." Cupp explained that the main concern with excessive nitrates is the "blue baby syndrome, and the effects nitrate can have on livestock." however there are no documented cases of this at this time. And, there is very little threat to adults or older children. He went on to say that th? state EPA is aware that there are 10 counties in the state with con-

WOYC was sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children in 1971. The NAEYC is the country’s largest organization of early childhood professionals. Most of NAEYC’s 50,000 members participate in one of 350 local and state affiliate groups. Lakeland Community Daycare, an agency of United Way, has nursery school activities, and organized play for children ages two through 12. The daycare, staffed by qualified personnel, is open from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Carol Hurd, is director and there is a 15 member volunteer board of directors. lamination problems, and is currently working on a law dealing with the problem. “I’m not a prophet, but I think if we don’t get something worked out to start regulating wells in the county," said Cupp, “it’ll be done on the state level. I can see it (well regulating) coming and I’d like to keep it on the local level. ’ The ordinance will maintain proper depth of residential wells, proper location, as well as check for bacteria and nitrates in the water. The procedure wHI require a permit be attained from the county at approximately S3O, and will be for residential wells only. Commercial wells are inspected on the state level and will not be effected by the county ordinance. Cupp said that the county started finding elevated amounts in water when testing per request, approximately three years ago. He stated that the acceptable amount of nitrate, is ten milligrams per liter, and that some wells in the county have tested as high as 80 or 90 milligrams. Recently, Cupp met with a number of area well-drillers to explain the situation and notify them of the possible ordinance He commentotl that they seemed generally pleased with the ordinance, and that they expressed a desire to work with local of-
ficials rather than dealing withk the state. 'x Cupp noted that at this time Elkhart County officials are handing out well water to those with contaminated water, and that the EPA is ' expected to mandate wells be checked for asbestos in the future. The Kosciusko County ordinance is expected to be ready for approval by the commissioners in AugusJ or September of this year. 1 ...A ' 4'I ■■■■ ™ fl I r ' ’ ,1 . ■ I j I 1 ENTERS PAGEANT — As announced by Evelyn Lahaie.
