On the table are bread and cup, elements of Communion of which worshipers are invited to partake every Sunday. A central part of Holy Week is the observance of the first Communion at the Last Supper in the upper room the night before Jesus was crucified.

Passover and the Christians

By GLEN LONG Staff Writer It was approaching the Jewish feast of the Passover when Jesus entered Jerusalem. This feast was to remind the people of the hardships which were endured by their ancestors in Egypt and of the “passing over” of their homes by the angel of God when the first-born in every unmarked Egyptian house was slain. Dale Kuhns, senior minister of the Christian Church of Milford recently explained how this feast, although still observed by the Jews, did, in fact, become Christian. “At the last passover before He was crucified, Jesus met with His disciples in the upper room to observe the passover feast. As He observed it He gave the meal a whole new meaning. When the children of Israel left

Egypt they were told by God to take unleavened bread so it would last longer on their journey. Their supply lasted until God began sending manna from heaven to them in the wilderness. Unleavened (leaven being the symbol of sin) bread thus became a reminder of the Egyptian bon-dage-and suffering. *•'. As Jesus took unleavened bread at the Last Supper He gave it a new significance. As He broke the bread He said, ‘This is my body, broken for you.’ As He instructed the disciples to eat it Jesus was breaking with r . Jewish tradition. The bread became a symbol of His perfectness and completeness. He then took the cup of unfermented fruit of the vine and said, 'This is my blood which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Drink ye all of it.’ Jesus then said ‘This do in remembrance of me until I come

again.' I will not drink of this until I drink it anew with you in my father’s kingdom.' This was the beginning of our present Communion service. Just about every persuasion has some type of Communion service. Both Biblical and secular histories record the fact that Communion service was the central part of every worship service. Thus we who desire to follow the New Testament as closely as possible offer Corams nion every Sunday. Christian Communion is a direct outgrowth of the old Jewish Passover feast. When Jesus died on the cross the Old Testament law was nailed to the cross, symbolizing that it was complete' The new law, with Jesus as the central figure, was coming into being to continue on. The Old Testament law was complete and Christ became the law."

Senior citizens serve / Apostolic Christian Church

By GLEN LONG * Staff Writer The cornerstone bf, the.. Apostolic Christian Chui*ch in Milford states that the church was built in 1906. It has served the community weii since that time and continues to serve, solid as the day it was built. It was remodeled in 1940, 1960 and had new pews and a new roof installed in 1986. ’ ‘ This church has a rich heritage of senior members who continue Ho use their wisdom and experience to give guidance and encouragement to the members after having completed their active role? in the spiritual life of the church. These active retired church leaders include, among many others, local residents Theo Beer and Elmer Hartter. In the Apostolic Christian Church, the spiritual head of the church is the elder, who is currently Jesse Beer. The elder is assisted by a deacon and there are normally four ministers, all of whom hold non-phid positions. The multiple minister arrangement allows the ministers to take some Sundays to visit other satellite churches which may benefit from a visit from the older, more established church.

) Theo Beer, who was converted to Christ at the age of 22, became a minister in the local church at the age of 29 and later became the elder of the church. He had mqv- z ed from Mansfield, Ohio, to the Milford area with his family in March, 1912. He and his wife, Naoma, still reside on the farm 1 his .parents bought three miles west of Milford. Rev. Beer is retired now after serving for 52 years as minister and elder. He and his brother, Henry Beer, now deceased, were ministers together for over 50 years. During Rev. Beer’s active ministry the church grew from 35 families to 65 families. He said one of the difficult factors in the church in his early years of preaching was that the sermon had to be given in both German and English. With the older, German-speaking members all gone now, the sermon, since. World War 11, has only been in English. Rev. Beer said the current Sunday church schedule of a morning service a fellowship break and a second service at 12:30 p.m. is a carry-over from the horse and buggy days, when travel time made it unhandy for members to make the trip back for an evening service. The retired minister said he

was always very strong for youth programs in the church, as is Jesse Beer, the current elder. He said the local church is one of 72 Apostolic Christian Churches in the United States and the one major foreign outreach area for the church is in Japan. He commented that he had been privileged to marry early in his ministry and the seven children in his family made it interesting on Sunday mornings when they wanted to sit with dad at the pulpit instead of in the pew with their mother. The pastor said that total immersion baptism is the cornerstone of the Apostolic Christian Church. “It is not baptism that saves a person," he shid. "That follows after his faith is established in the blood of Christ. Baptism is the burial of the basic nature of man." He added that he felt two sac-

tors required of an effective elder are to “Love the members, all the members, and lead them rather than drive them.” When asked how he feels in retirement, Rev. Beer said he is not one to be proud of his works, but 'realistically he is pleased about his long church service. “If I had one fault, I was pro- , bably a little too kind with people,” he stated. Then with a gentle smile he said, “But I can live with that, too.” To Naoma’s comment that the head of a church must treat the members as his family, Rev. Beer added, "We do try to use the Word of God to do the best we can by the Grace of God.” Elmer Hartter. who retired three years ago. served as an ordained deacon with both elders Theo and Jesse Beer.
