2011, a garbage odyssey

(EDITOR’S NOTE: The following scenerio won first :< place honors on the state level for Syracuse fourth grader :•:• Tom Sorenson. I, Dr. :g Pearl, have inherited a garg bage dump from my father, :g who got it from my grandpa, g: and so on, and so on. I am 30 years old, and I live in Montana. I have a wife and two kids and live a hard, but happy life. You might think it’s easy, running a garbage dump, but it sure isn’t Disneyland. You • g see, I don’t just run any old dump. We have an X-15 solar g: powered garbage cannon. It ;!•: shoots garbage out into space, g: although most of it is •g disintegrated by the explosion g of the cannon. It has duel bar:g rels, each occupying enough g punch to make Mt. St. Helens :g look like a popgun. There is •:•: one letdown though. It is impossible to get insurance for •g the thing. But I can undersg: tand, I mean, who would want ■g to insure a multi-million dollar

cannon? I guess that you think it’s bad to polute space, but we don’t leave a speck of garbage out floating around. You see, this cannon is so powerful, we just aim it at a handy black hole, and it is sucked into it! Well, I won’t get into that. You see, I am trying to perfect a security system that will ensure safety to the cannon for at least 90 years. It will have a security card that is impossible to counterfeit and infared sensors that completly surrond the dump. But, we haven’t quite perfected it yet, so the dump is just heavily guarded. That is only one of the ideas that we have developed. For instance Dr. George Hadley had an idea that we could make robots so that they can guard the dump. Then we would not have to hire men to guard. Another idea is that of Dr. Jim Hathaway who says that we should make a steel wall surronding the dump. Whichever one we choose, it will cost heaps. They are still being'created and tested in the labs. At least one of them will be perfected, and the world will be a better place to live in without garbage to worry about.
