Brian Bowser relays experience as senate page
(By CARLA GAFF Staff Writer , "If I could change something, I’d probably request that there be less talking when a bill is being read,” stated senate page for a day, Brian Bowser. “I don’t know how they knew what was happening it was so noisy in there.” ■ Bowser is an eighth grade student at Milford Junior High School, and the 14-year-old son of Greg and Janet Bowser. He served as senate page for State Senator John B. Augsburger on the 39th day of the 1987’,, * legislative session. Profile Student pages spend one day at the capitol building assisting members with a variety of legislature-related activities and learning about the structure of Indiana’s state government. According to the senator, visiting the state capitol and serving as a page in the Indiana General Assembly is a very educational experience for young people because it provides them with the opportunity to directly observe and participate in the legislative process. Bowser agrees with the senator, stating that he feels it’s a learning experience because you take a tour of the capitol building and are shown parts of the house, and are taught the process of making a bill into a law. Although he points out that he doesn’t have hopes of a political career and is not that interested in politics, he would still recommend the experience. The senate page experience for Bowser began at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, when he arrived at the capitol building. The day began with groups being organized for the 9:30 tour of the building and a history talk. During the tour, students are shown the senate, house

galley and the supreme court, along with a detailed explanation of what is happening at that moment. After the tour, senate pages were sent on a variety of short errands, instructed by interns. The interns are college students majoring in the political sciences who are given credits for their time spent, as well as a nominal sum. They assist the senate by organizing the pages and carrying out additional errands, as well as a variety of other duties. Bowser stated that his advice to anyone wishing to be a page, would be “have a lot of ideas of places to go during your lunch break. Because the senate breaks for two hour lunches, and you could be really bored sitting alone in the lunch room.” After lunch the senate pages are taken to the floor of the senate where they are given maps with pictures of each senator on it. In this way, if they’re to take things to a senator they’ll know where he sits and what he looks like. However, Bowser explained that one of the unique things about the experience was that student page’s stand along the wall waiting to be beckoned during senate sessions, and are not given seats. Students are on the senate floor from 1-4 p.m., and are allowed to talk with senators and listen procedures. Bowser commented that he decided to be a page just because he thought it would be interesting, and it was. His other interest include sports and hopes of a Navy career. At this time he participates in junior high basketball, football and wrestling. Although he plans to be in high school sports, he statesit will all depend on if he has enough time, and how much home work he has. His freshman high school schedule is made out, and includes classes that will help him with his Navy career. “I want to fly planes,” said Bowser. His mother added, “He’d like to be accepted into the Naval Academy and land planes on ships. ” She went on to explain that Brian became interested in flying after the family visited the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio, several years ago. Adding that she has a nephew in the Navy, which also seemed to kindle Brian’s dreams. But for Bowser, like most other students, it’s one dream at a time. This year he was senate page for a day, met Senator Augsburger, Lieutenant Governor John Mutts and Secretary of State Evan Bayh, as well as receiving a certificate and a picture of himself with Augsburger. But what next year will bring, is another dream away.
Academy Awards in 1970, his record sales had surpassed the 20 million mark. ” . B.J.
