Family night big hit at Syracuse church

lUj ....... .. , Staff Writer • ■'?; < ■' ■ Family Night at the Syracuse Church of God has become very popular with the youth in the area and currently 4Ck6O young persons attend each week. The church is located at 113 E. Washington St. in Syracuse with Wednesday eveing services held at J p.m. from September through March. During the other four months the service is a Bible study aimed more toward the adult members. “We stress our ministry to children and youth a lot,” explained Church of God pastor Mike Johnson. “We really want the youth of the area to feel like a part of the church family. And as they mature and become aduits they’ll want to bring their families to the church. ’' The church has a van which is used to pick-up young people on Wednesday nights, and generally two separate trips are needed in order to get everyone to the church. Those attending are not only from the Syracuse-Wawasee area, but many are from Milford and Goshen as well. Pastor Johnson commented that the Family Night service is not continued though the entire year due to summer activities. And that “one of the big things with the service is the great commitment that is made by those who teach.” Family Night is set-up much like a typical Sunday School, with different class rooms and staff for each age group. Christian Education lessons are then taught to the youth on their particular level, beginning with the nursery class going up through the senior high. Family Night services are kicked-off each year with a special activity and concluded in the same fashion. This year’s special conclusion service will be tonight (April 1) and will be a swimming and pizza party. Adults are not excluded during Family Night services, as adults v.’hn are not teaching are involved

Sgjgispecial Bible study program. They are currently studying the book of Matthew and have recently finished Genesis and Ezekiel. Regular Bible study services will be starting again in April, with a special series being held in May. During the series, entitled “After I say I do,” communication apd conflict solutions will be discussed. There will be four parts to the series, which will feature 30-45 minute video presentations, with discussion groups after each. The entire community is invited to all services, stated Pastor Johnson, youth and adult alike may also feel free to make arrangements to be picked up by the church van. He went on to ex-®, plain that the church will be helping to coordinate a united vacation Bible school in Syracuse this summer at the Oakwood Park. "We’re really excited about this program,” said Pastor Johnson, “it’ll be tremendous.” The program is being called the Marketplace A.D., and is currently being set-up to take place in August, with all churches in the Syracuse Ministerial Church Association taking part in it. The program is being planned to include 200-250 children, and will involve a variety of Bible time activities, including baking bread and storytellers. Again, pastor Johnson stresses that'the entire community is invited to take part in this activity, as well as all other activities and services at his church.

AWANA: A program for youth

The name AWANA is derived from the first letters of Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed (II Tim. 2:15). To produce such approved workmen, AWANA has carefully selected Bible verses to be memorized and scripture portions are taught to prove doctrinal truths. After all, God promises that His word will not return void but will accomplish its purpose (Isa. 55 > 11). Memorial work is chosen to establish a personal relationship between each clubber and Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, build up clubbers in Bible knowledge, and instill in them a love and respect for God and His word. AWANA has been raised up by the Lord to provide an evangelistic program for reaching young people. Unashamedly, the Awana Youth Association is a Bible-centered, youth-oriented, weekday club program. It is basically different from many other weekday youth organizations. Every AWANA Club is organized and controlled by the local church and produced as an evangelistic tool to be used prayerfully and skillfully by local church leaders. AWANA reaches
