Education should include nutrition information
By MARIETTA F. HENRY Extension Home Economist 1^ — America is raising a generation of children who don’t know their way around nutrition, let alone a kitchen. Many of our children aren’t learning it at school, and even fewer are learning it at home. The reasons are all around us The revolution in American lifestyles has revolutionized the way we eat. Three planned meals a day have been overthrown in favor of five or six snacks. The rule of the day is quick and convenient. And when it’s quick and convenient, chances are there’s no time factored in for teaching our children skills important for health and well being. Elementary and high schools also are so caught up in high-tech that home economics classes usually take a back seat. One of the consequences of our high-tech society is that when we think of a child’s education, we think of math and science. We need to be more aware than children also need to learn survival skills. They have to learn about basic food preparation and food safety somewhere. That’s even more critical when you consider that many children today are eating on their own because parents are working. In many c&ses, especially in singleparent households, the children prepare what few meals the family has together. So the basic skills need to be

the end of the current year after 40 years of teaching. Rev. John Shypulefski a student at Grace college at Winona % Lake, is the new preacher at the North Webster Christian church.
taught earlier than ever with children who have to manage and make decisions earlier than they’ve ever had to in previous generations. And let’s not forget the 13 million children living in poverty who have to learn how to choose and possibly prepare meals in the most nutritional way possible and have to do it with fewer dollars. The ignorance includes basic sanitation. Grandma taught mom by washing her hands before cutting up the chicken. Mom watched grandma do it, and it all became second nature. Who’s teaching the mom of tomorrow? Today, many of the flu symptoms really are food-borne illnesses brought about by ignorance. People carry their chicken on a cutting board to the barbecue grill, cook the chicken, and then put it back on the unwashed board. And they wonder why they get sick! Food poisoning also can have longer-range consequences than a three-day bout with diarrhea. For example, some food poisoning can cause rheumatoid arthritis to activate earlier than it otherwise would. Hart to announce Former Sen. Gary Hart of Colorado will announce his candidacy for president on April 13 in Denver, aides said. Hart surprised many observers in 1984 by ’ finishing second to former Vice President Walter F. Mondale in the race for the Democratic nomination.
He preached there for the first time on February 12, and on February 19, the congregation voted to accept him. He will be at the church until June when he will graduate from Grace college.
Although the potential'for trouble is a concern, the solution is easier now than ever before. With today’s focus on fitness and natural foods, people are hungry for more information about good nutrition and health. The time is ripe to think about balancing instruction in high-tech skills with instruction in survival skills. LEGALS LEGAL NOTICE OF PUBLIC SALE To: Timothy Tyler GTI Gemini Travel, Inc. 108 N.
