Championship meet ends season for swimmers
Two grueling rounds of swimming competition capped the year for the more than 4,000 registered Indiana Age Group swimmers. Eligibility is determined by times recorded in meets during the season. There were 37 clubs represented at the Indiana (Northern Division) swimming semi- * state last Saturday, Feb. 28, and among them, three members of the Wawasee Swim Club advanced to the finals, while two more of their team members achieved alternate status. Swim club defeats DeKalb YMCA
In its final meet of the season, the Wawasee Swim Club soundly defeated the DeKalb YMCA from Auburn on Saturday, Feb. 21, in 'the Syracuse pool. The final tally was Wawasee 308, DeKalb, 177. First place finishers in the effort were: Eight and under boys — Kyle Metcalf, 50 freestyle, and Sean Hoffman, 50 backstroke; (eight and under girls) Chandra Mathew, 100 individual medley and 50 freestyle (heat one); Jenny Marty, 100 freestyle; Kassidy Biddle, 50 freestyle (heat two), 50 backstroke (heat one); Alicia Holterman, 50 backstroke (heat two). The relay team of Marty, Mathew, Biddle and Jeri Yoder took a first place in the free relay. dinners (9-10 boys) were Scott Metcalf, 100 individual medley, 50 breaststroke and 100 freestyle; Jerod Mills, 50 butterfly; Justin Banks, 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke; Metcalf, Mills, Banks and Chad Leamon took both the medley and free relays. Jennifer Seemeyer takes spelling honors
Sixth grader Jennifer Seemeyer won the Milford School Spelling Bee in the ninth round by correctly spelling the word “lesion.” The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Seemeyer, r 1, Milford, Jennifer won a Webster’s Collegiate dictionary and the right to enter the County Spelling Bee to be held on March 16 in Warsaw. The school runner-up and seventh-eighth grade division champion was eighth grader Vicky Beer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Beer, Milford, who missed the-, t word “multitude.” She also received a

The Davis brothers again won every 13 and up boys' event: Terry won the 50 freestyle, 50 breaststroke and 100 freestyle, while Shon took the 100 individual medley, 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly. Winners (13 and up girls): Tonya Perzanowski in the 100 individual medley and 50 backstroke, and Shawna Miller, 100 freestyle. The entire team and coaching staff, training well four nights a week, produced a five wins and one loss record for the year, of which they are all very proud. The year concludes with a team awards’ night and party on Monday, March 9, at the Wawasee pool.
Webster's Collegiate dictionary and will participate in the seventh-eighth grade finals on March 18. Runners-up and alternates for the county bee were Tricia Wuthrich, grade six, who missed the wdrd “incompetent” in the sixth round; and Mindy Beatty, grade seven, who missed “monetary” in the seventh rounds. Judges for the local event on Monday, March 2, were local business people Becky Doll and Dr. Bruce Lamb, along with language educators Mary Pearl and Kara Wenger. Tim Yeager, fifth grade teacher, was the pronouncer for the spelling bee The County Spelling Bee finals Will at 7 p.m. on March 16 (fifthsixth grades); on March 18 (seventh-eighth grades); and on March 19 (finals).
