ed the game with 22 points, rebounded a missed Wawasee field goal attempt and scored. After Darin Atwood canned a pair of free throws, bringing the Warriors within one, 45-44, Mangas drove the baseline for an easy layup. From that point, the game was a see-saw affair. Central moved ahead by a field goal, but the Warriors — primarily Mangas — would answer the call.

Injuries plague Warriors

SYRACUSE — Wawasee’s girls gymnastics team suffered its first loss of the season Thursday when the Warriors dropped a 95.30-90.1 decision to Huntington North. Wawasee’s Anne Pohl was the lone champion in the meet for the host school. She captured the victory in the floor exercise with a 8.65 score. Other top finishers for the Warriors were Sherry Daniels’ second on the beam, and Saby Vale’s third place efforts on the bars, and all around. In the junior varsity action, Huntington North scored a lopsided 7545-34.95 victory over the Warriors. All-star player Wawasee’s Scot McDowell, an all-state linebacker, was named to the North All-Star team. McDowell was named to the defensive line for the 21st annual all-star game. The game will be played on July 25, at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis. The series is tied at 10-all after the North’s 20-12 victory last year.

Mangas, who scored 10 of the Warriors’ final 13 points, sank a pair of free throws with 31 seconds left in regulation. The two freebies gave Wawasee a 52-51 lead. However, Elkhart Central had a chance to re-take the lead with 19 seconds. But Jeff Kollat could only connect on one of his two free throws, evening the score at 52-all. In search of the victory, Wawasee, as expected looked to its leader. However, Mangas’ 15-foot jumper sailed through the air, hit nothing — except Rhoades’hands. On Rhoades’ attempt to get off a shot before the final horn, the senior guard was fouled. Rhoades, after missing the first attempt, sank the final attempt with :01 showing on the clock. The Warriors won another squeaker.

“He’s done that before, and I was confident he would do it again,” insisted Goshert, referring to Rhoades’ heroics. Only two Wawasee players reached the double-digit scoring plateau against the Blue Blazers. Mangas led the attack with 22 markers, while Brett Harter collected 10 points before fouling out in the fourth quart* As a team, the irriors connected on 42% of their field goal attempts. Elkhart Central canned 44% of its attempts. The Warriors outrebounded the taller Blazers, 31-26. Mike Eastman and John Erasure both grabbed eight boards apiece for Wawasee. “Rebounding was very important to us,” admitted Goshert. “We worked hard on the boards, and it paid off. An offensive rebound won the game for us.” Goshert was particularly pleas-

ed with the effort of Erasure. The junior came off the bench to grab his eight rebounds. “Erasure came off the bench and did a nice job inside theaj paint,” praised Goshert of his 6-3 player. “He had to have a wagonload of rebounds.” The game was evenly played from start to finish. The Warriors led after every break, thanks to a 18-foot jumper from Tim Mangas as the first period ended. The Warriors extended their 14-13 lead after one period to five, 27-22, at halftime. But the game was far from being over. Elkhart Central closed Wawasee’s spread to a single point entering the final period. But the Warriors held on for the victory. Wawasee will close its regular season Friday evening when it hosts Bremen. The junior varsity game begins at 6:15.
