Warsaw swimmers edge Warriors in NLC meet

DUNLAP — The Northern Lakes Conference boys’ swim meet came down to talent. Both Warsaw and Wawasee had enough talent to win the event, but ,the Tigers gained their secondstraight NLC crown with a convincing 301-283 victory over the Warriors. Warsaw earned the dual competition trophy with a perfect NLC slate. Rounding out the scoring for the seven-team field was Concord’s third place total of 212 points, followed by Goshen (127), North Wood (117), Plymouth (76), and Bremen (32). Although the Tigers had superior talent, the Warriors had superior depth. The latter nearly gave Wawasee the victory. However, Warsaw won nine of the 11 events. And the Tigers needed all of them for the win. “I think what it comes down to is that we had two real good swim teams here, and someone Had to win,” said Wawasee’s Tim

Caldwell. “We swam well, but they swam better. ’ ’ « The tone of the meet was set in the initial event — the medley relay. Wawasee, entering the contest had raced Warsaw on two separate occasions, and lost both times. The third was no charm for Wawasee. Instead, Warsaw’s gang of Shane Diffendarfer, Kenton Hoppus, Rod Mohler, and Chad Twombly shattered the Northern Lakes Conference and Concord school record in racing to its first place effort. Warsaw’s 1:42.01 time eclipsed Goshen’s 1:43.48 effort in 1982. Wawasee, as expected, was second in the event, and on the heels of the Tigers the rest of the meet. The Warriors closed Warsaw’s gap, slightly, with a first place finish in the freestyle relay. Unfortunately for Wawasee, it was at the end of the meet. Matt Fry back, Brian Neff,

Mark Rich, and Steve Rozow finished in 3:26.29, just ahead of the Tigers. Other Warriors turning in good performances were Brad Smith, a second place in the 100-yard butterfly, Mark Rich, second in the 100 freestyle, and David Keener, second in diving. Keener’s effort off the board broke the Northern Lakes Conference record for points in a meet. His 443.8 points eclipsed North Wood’s Nate Kuhn’s mark of 431.65 set in 1984. However, Goshen’s Jason Pyles holds the new mark of 448.9 — set in this meet. The Warriors will battle the Tigers this weekend in the Elkhart Sectional. It is expected that the two Northern Lakes Conference powers will battle for the sectional crown. 200 Medley Relay — Warsaw (Shane Diffendarfer, Kenton Hoppas, Rod Mohler, Chad Twombly), 1:42.01; Wawasee;
