Tom Prickett believes in Tough Love
By Carla Gaff Staff Writer “All you can do is, what you can do," says Tom Prickett, member of the Wawasee Tough Love Support Group, “after that the kid has to take over and control his own problem. ’ ’ Prickett is heavily involved in the group and was a part of its beginnings. Tough Love was started in Syracuse in May of 1985. and has helped over 100 parents since that time. Additionally the group has assisted 14 young persons in receiving help through rehabilitation centers. Profile Prickett states that he became interested in the Tough Love concept after becoming personally involved with substance abuse. “In the beginning I tried to divorce myself from the community,” he states, “I was just so embarrassed, and felt like everyone knew about my kids.” However, through a period of time, and numerous discussions with rehabilitation centers, Prickett decided Tough Love was for him. “I’ve had a rather negative response so far," he explains, “but I still feel that Tough Love is the right decision. ” Prickett comments not everyone he's associated with agrees with his decision, and that he has even been toldthat hisgroup is one that “throws their kids out ofthe house.”} He has also had many county officials dealing with students and young people, explain to him that there is not a drug or alcohol problem in the area. To this, Prickett explains that most people do

Think again! A lot of people think the new tax laws mean they can’t have an Individual Retirement Account anymore. So they aren’t making their 1986 contributions. . .or don’t plan on continuing to make contributions for 1987. Well, at Lake City Bank we want you to know the facts before you decide what to do about your IRA. Because chances are you are still eligible to receive at least part of the tax deductions for ’ contributions to your account. First, everyone is still eligible for completely deductible contributions to their 1986 account. So if you haven’t made youts yet, do so before you file your ’B6 return. Second, most people will still be eligible for partial deductions on their IRA in 1987. The only exceptions to this are people who are covered by an employer’s pension plan and who file incomes of $50,000 jointly or $35,000 as individuals. Everyone else will be able to take all or part of their contributions as deductions. And everyone, whether they are eligible for tax deductible contributions or not, will still receive tax deferred interest on their IRAs until they begin withdrawals. TOUGH LOVE — Tom Prickett of Syracuse believes in Tough Love. Prickett is a member of the Wawasee Tough Love Support group, which has instigated the starting of another such group in Columbia City, a teen alcoholics anonymous group in the area, and helped to start the Just Say No club in Syracuse. (Photoby Carla Gaff) not want to face, or believe such problems exist in their community. That is until they're hit on the head with the problem.and it affects their own lives. Prickett says that the group is not just for the parents of substance abuse children, and that the group also has members who are having non-drug related disciplinary problems.* And that the group

was started in order to aid parents in dealing with any child related problem that is disrupting their lives. He gives and example of a mother who was unable to get her daughter to make her bed each morning. Members of Tough Love suggested that the bed be totally torn apart and stored, until such time, as the young person was ready to assume the responsibility of making her own bed. Reportedly, the incident was not an easy one for the parent to handle, as she found it hard to see her child sleeping on the floor, and being embarrassed when friends commented that her room had no bed in it. But Tough Love worked and the young person was given back her bed, with the understanding that it was to be made up every morning. However, 90 percent of the Wawasee Tough Love Support Group members are dealing with problems incurred from Substance abuse in their children. But agree that disciplinary problems may lead to substance abuse in later years, and that whatever the problem is, the group is available to give support. Prickett states that the group is not for “just” Syracuse residents, and that anyone, anywhere may become a member. “Anyone in the world who wants to come, is invited,” he says. Although Prickett spends a lot of time helping the Tough Love group, he’s also working on a one-one-one basis with James Braggs. Braggs has recently kicked drugs and alcohol and is working to recover his life, and graduate from Wawasee High School, while living at the Prickett home. “I feel great,” explains Prickett, who goes on to say that his kids, as well as Braggs, know that they're always welcome in my home, and that they’re always Joved, but that I will in no way tolerate alcohol or drugs on my property. It’s not easy, it’s Tough Love, but that’s the only way for Tom Prickett, and millions of other Tough Love advocates across the nation.
