Jews for Jesus to speak
What do the Jewish Passover and Jesus’ Last Supper have in common? Murray Tillcs, staff evangelist with Jews for Jesus, will answer that question as he presents “Christ in the Passover” at Trinity Lutheran Church, 420 South West Blvd., Elkhart, on March 8, at 9:30 a.m. MURRAY TILLES The purpose of the “Christ in the Passover” presentation is to enhance the Christian understanding of the New Testament by showing a Jewish background for the communion celebration. Ancient and modern Jewish iustoms are discussed and described with an emphasis on the aspect of redemption that Christ accomplished at Calvary. A table is set with the traditional Jewish Passover items, including representative foods which are explained, but not eaten. Members of the Jews for Jesus group have given this demonstration in more than 1,000 different churches. It was originally written in 1956 by Moishe Rosen, the founder and leader of Jews for Jesus. It was abstracted from the writings of the former Rabbi Leopold Cohn, who came to Christ in 1894 and died in 1936. Rosen contends that some of the most important elements of Christian doctrine, such as the Trinity, the principle of substitutionary atonement, and salvation through a personal relationship with the Messiah, are implied in the Seder (Passover Feast) as observed by Orthodox Jews even today.

Jews for Jesus, an evangelistic agency, is best known for its creative materials. Its literature, called “broadsides,” deals with contemporary themes ranging from nuclear disarmament to Pac-Man. Broadsides uses humor and clever illustration, yet has a serious message; namely, that Jesus is the promised Messiah for Jews and Gentiles. Other materials include the original Jewish gospel music and drama which is presented by mobile teams that tour the US and overseas. The organization also has permanent branches in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Toronto and New York City. The staff now numbers 100, making it one of the largest works of its kind. Moishe Rosen, national leader of the Jews for Jesus ministry, says, “Our message is not new, but we’re telling it in a new way. For too long, the Jewish roots of Christianity have been forgotten. Gentile cultural trappings have often been confused with what the
Farm seminar sponsored on March 17 at Donaldson
Out of concern over the growing number of Northern Indiana farm families undergoing separation and loss, the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, Convent Ancilla Domini, Donaldson, Ind. are joining hands with the Marshall County Ministerial Association and the three dioceses of Ft. Wayne-Soiith Bend, Lafayette and Gary in sponsoring a farm seminar on March 17 at Donaldson. “As Farmers Cry, Who Is Listening?” is the title of the oneday seminar which will explore various aspects of the farm and rural community crisis from the viewpoint of farm credit services, lawyers, bankers, economists, family counselors, doctors, advocacy groups church groups and farmers themselves. In the morning session, a panel of these individuals and groups will be asked to share their viewpoints. The afternoon will be devoted to looking at ways in which groups and individuals already offer assistance to those undergoing separation and loss and to explore new ways for involvement. “Our sincere hope is that farmers, those working with
Biblical religion teaches. The Messiah was born in Israel, not Greece or Rome. His mother’s name was Miryam,- not Mary. She was told by an angel, ‘And thou shalt have a son and call his name Y’shua, for he shall save his people from their sins.’ Y’shua is the Jewish way to say Jesus.” Jews for Jesus is launching what the group calls a “Y’shua Campaign” complete with books,. record albums, lapel pins and bumper stickers, to heighten the awareness of Jews and Gentiles to the cultural contest in which the gospel was given. Those attending the special “Christ in the Passover” program at Trinity Lutheran Church on March 8, at 9:30 a.m., will also have an opportunity to learn more about what Jews for Jesus has planned byway of evangelism nationwide. The program is open to the general public and Murray Titles will be available to answer questions those attending might have.
farmers and those involved in agri-businesses will share with us their ideas of how church groups, neighborhood groups, health services and individuals can be of help to them,” Rev. David Gosnell stated. Fr. Gosnell, rural life representative of the Gary diocese, is cocoordinator of the seminar with Dolores Schafer, Director of Communications, Convent Ancilla Domini. f ■ Clergy of all faiths, professionals, farmers and all who are interested in the plight of their rural neighbors are welcome to the seminar, which is hosted by Lindenwood, a conference and ministry center sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. The program will begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at 3 r 30 p.m. For further information on how to register, call 936-9936. PLANNING INFORMATIONAL PROGRAM — At a recent committee meeting of a group sponsored by the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association, plans were formulated to present a program to assist elderly citizens in understanding and making correct decisions relative to their Medicare coverage. Ministers concerned for elderly
(By (TIEN LONG Staff Writer The Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association is forming a committee of local area church people to address a growing problem for many senior citizens. This problem centers around the need for elderly citizens, those covered by Medicare, to receive factual information about their Medicare coverage, whether they may need additional insurance to augment this coverage, and a better understanding of associated government rules and regulations. Frank Barcus, former pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Syracuse and Calvary Church in Cromwell, ran into the maze of government regulations and directives relating to Medicare when his mother entered a Ligonier nursing home and also required home health care. He found that government controls are becoming increasingly stringent on hospital and nursing home admission and dismissal for those on Medicare and that it

seems “nobody really seems to know what is going on.” Each agency related to insurance programs seems to have different sets of rules, regulations and procedures. There is concern that some of the supplemental insurance ads on television, most by well-known older TV personalities, may not tell the correct story and merely rely on fear to induce purchase of their policies. In a recent committee meeting it was said that one of the worst aspects of this is that the fine print sometimes makes it difficult to see that these policies will not actually pay benefits as the purchaser expects. This truth is unfortunately only known when the need has arisen and it is found that insurance security is not really there. Mike Johnson, pastor of Syracuse Church of Christ, related that a lady in Southern Indiana had actually purchased over 100 different supplemental insurance policies, none of which would pay as she expected when she became ill and entered a hospital.

The committee is planning an information session at the Wawasee High School cafeteria annex on Sunday, April 26, at 2 p.m. for those who may be considering purchase of supplemental insurances and children who are helping elderly parents with their affairs. The featured speaker will be Gilbert Templeton, from Noble County, who will also present the program, “Knowing Your Rights,” from the American Association of Retired People (AARP). There will also be a panel discussion by local medical people on the program. Others who are working with Barcus and Johnson to help clarify this subject are D. Arnold Neff, pastor of Syracuse of the Brethren; Ronald Looney, pastor of Syracuse United Pentecostal Church; Ken Foulke, retired United Methodist minister; and Priscilla Rhode, a concerned and interested Syracuse resident. More information will be forthcoming as the program plans of the ministerial association become firm and in place.
