Wawasee's transition game sprints past Rochester
I By MAIJK WEINSTEIN Sports Editor ROCHESTER - Lately, Wawasee’s boys’ basketball team has resembled a slow moving train. Friday evening, however, the Warriors played like a run-a- , way locomotion. % The Warriors exploded to a 19-7 first period lead, then cruised to a 66-46 Northern Lakes Conference victory over the Rochester Zebras.

With the victory, Wawasee improves its overall record to 13-4 and 3-2 in the NLC. Rochester, meanwhile, slips to 9-6 on the season and 3-2 in the conference. “This was a big win for us,” said Wawasee head coach Gary Goshert. “It’s important for us to stay close to the top in the conference. I thought our play tonight was very pleasing.” Wawasee’s defense was the difference. The Warriors were able to shut down Rochester’s offensive attack, then, use an uptempo style offense to bury the Zebras,
points. The early charge enabled the Warriors to lead at every break, which included a 34-17 halftime spread. Dick paced the Warriors’ attack with his 19 points. Basil Bonner chipped in with 13 points, while Matt Koble added 12. “It was a good team effort,” insisted JV coach Neal Frantz. “The team played well” The young Warriors’ next action is Friday evening at 6:15 against North Wood.

“We got our transition game running early,” said Wawasee head coach Gary Goshert. “Our defensive intensity helped start the break. Plus we shot very well.” What an understatement. For the game, the Warriors canned 57% of their field goal attempts (31 of 54). In contrast, Rochester connected on 13-of-its-44 fielders (29%). In the first half, Wawasee was a team of spurts. It scored the first eight points in the game, then added a 10-point run at the start mh the second quarter to seize control of the affair. The Warriors’ eight-point spurt sent the visitors on their way. Wawasee built the 19-7 advantage after the first eight minutes, then broke the game open early in the second. Wawasee sends four wrestlers to semistate HUNTERTOWN — It was a tough weekend for Wawasee’s wrestlers. The Warriors, under first-year coach Dave VanLue, had four wrestlers advance into Saturday’s Goshen semistate while finishing fourth in the Carroll Regional. Host Carroll won the event with 101 points, while Fort Wayne Wayne was second with 96% points. Concordia followed in * third place with 68% points, and Wawasee’s 65 points was good enough for fourth place. Rounding out the top 10 were Bishop Dwenger in fifth, followed by Eastside, DeKalb, Fort Wayne Elmhurst, Churubusco, and Fort Wayne Harding. Wawasee’s lone regional champion was Jeff Welborn, Who kept his perfect record intact. Welborn, 33-0, defeated Fort Wayne Wayne’s Tim Wallace in the finals. Perhaps the closest match of the day occurred in the 119-pound division. Wawasee’s Eliseo Roa and Carroll’s Scott Hungerford battled to a 0-0 tie after three periods. However, in the overtime period, Hungerford had more strength and went on to defeat the young Warrior, 7-2. Other Wawasee wrestlers that advanced into the championship round included Brett Traviolia, who dropped a close decision to Waynes’ Will Ragle. The Warriors will send four wrestlers to Goshen this weekend for semistate competition. Action begins at 9 a.m. with championship competition is scheduled around 3 p.m.

Wawasee, with pressure defense, burned a couple of Rochester turnovers and missed Rochester field goals into 10 quick second quarter points. The second spurt, which gave Wawasee a 29-7 lead, buried the Zebras. Not even three converted Wawasee turnovers into scores near the end of the second stanza could bring Rochester within striking of the Warriors. Once the contest reached intermission, it was over. The second half was similar to the first. Wawasee played solid basketball —for the most part — while the Zebras struggled. The Warriors’ largest lead, 26 points, came in the final eight minutes. But the Warriors played sloppy down the stretch, enabling Rochester to close the gap at the end.
North Wood At Wawasee Game Time —6:15 p.m. Radio Coverage — None. Season Records — Wawasee enters this contest with North Wood with a three-game winning streak, and 13-4 overall record. The Warriors have a 3-2 Northern Lakes Conference mark. North Wood comes to the game with a 8-8 record and 1-4 NLC mark. North Wood Keys — The Panthers entered the season without much experience, but since the beginning, have developed into a nice basketball team ——__ One problem for coach Phil Lechlitner has been his teams inconsistency. The Panthers have played in helter-skelter fashion much of the season. Some of the inconsistency can be contributed to North Wood’s inexperience. However, the Panthers look to be coming on as of late. Last weekend they upset Goshen — which earlier drubbed Wawasee. Troy Schwartz and Mickey Marks are the most experienced players Lechlitner has on his roster. The two, both seniors, entered the campaign with the highest point total among varsity players. A key to the Panther attack is its ability in handling Wawasee’s pressure defense. Plymouth caused North Wood a lot of problems with its defense, and the Warriors could do the same. If North Wood takes care of the basketball, and gets good shots, it could be another thriller in Syracuse Friday evening. Wawasee Keys — Wawasee looks like it has turned its season around after dropping three straight games earlier this year. The turning point must be the Warriors’ thrilling victory over a very good Whitko team. Presently, the strength of this team is its defensive intensity and ability to use an uptempo-style offerfse.,This was very effective last weekend whenlhe Warriors rolled over Rochester by 20 points. A big plus for Wawasee is the fact that both Nathan Rhoades and Darin Atwood are looking to score more often. This has taken some of the pressure off-Tim Mangas, who leads the team in scoring. The Warriors are also receiving fine play from its frontcourt players, especially Mike Eastman and Brett Harter. Eastman has become a force inside the paint, while Harter has come up with several key plays for Wawasee. Wawasee has played five games without Fred Steffen, and it looks like they haire improved without the talented center. Just think how good they will be come sectional time when Steffen returns. The remaining three games are very important to the Warriors. With wins over North Wood and Bremen, the Warriors can finish in second place in the Northern Lakes Conference.

Although Wawasee’s play turned sloppy, the Warriors received a stellar performance from John Frasure. Playing for Mike Eastman, who was plagued with foul problems all evening, Frasure scored all of his points in the final half. “John solidified the inside for us,” insisted Goshert. “He really did a nice job for us when things were starting to get a little carried away.” Senior Tim Mangas paced Wawasee’s uptempo attack with 26 points and eight rebounds. Darin Atwood supported Mangas’ output with 14 points, while Frasure came off the bench to score 11. “Darin took a big step in the right direction,” added Goshert. “We’ve wanted him to start looking for his shot.
