Warriors stop streak with 54-53 comeback win I

I By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Editor SYRACUSE — In life, there is a time for everything. There is time to mourn, and a time to rejoice. A time for laughter and a time to be silent. There’s even a time to give, and a time to receive. Well, Friday evening was Wawasee’s time to win a basketball game. The Warriors, mired in a three-game losing streak, played solid defense in the second half as they came-from-behind to trip the Whitko Wildcats 54-53. “The Warriors are back ip, town to stay ,” said Wawasee head coach Gary Goshert just after the Warriors tripped the Wildcats. “I think we have the feeling again —a feeling that we can be a good little ball club.” The game was very important for die Warriors. With the team’s confidence shaken a bit, Wawasee needed to prove to itself that it can win without Fred Steffen.

This was Steffen’s third game out of Wawasee’s lineup — but Wawasee’s first win without the 6-3 juniorcenter. Wawasee, with the emotional victory, improves its mark to 11-4. Whitko, meanwhile, falls to 10-3. In this victory, Wawasee won the roller-coaster-type game. Whitko cruised early, leading 15-4 after one period. At that point, it looked like it was going to be a long evening for the Warriors. But the Warriors took a ride upwards in the second period. Wawasee, forcing Whitko into poor shot selection during the period, outscored the visitors .26-15 in the frame to pull even, 30-30, at halftime. “We quit playing defense in the second quarter,” said Whitko mentor Bill Patrick after the loss. “We got ahead of them, and we . didn’t think we had to play anymore.” The second half was a dog fight to the end. Wawasee trailed throughout most of the final 16 minutes of action. Still, the Warriors remained ; close enough that they could pull

ship? Her 8.8 score bested Wawasee’s Sobi Vale’s 8.05 effort. Harrington closed out the scoring with a third place finish. In the junior varsity competition, Littleton won the vault competition with a 7.3 score, while Julie Gunn won the beam competition, Vale was the winner in the floor routine, and Gina Byrd won the all-around with a 22.2 score. In another meet, the Warriors defeated Westview, 89.9-65.55. Daniels won the beam event with a 7.35 score, while Kistler was the winner on the bars.'"'— Other Wawasee winners included Kistler on the vault, and Pohl in the floor routine. Wawasee’s next action is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 5, at DeKalb. The Warriors’ next home meet is Tuesday, Feb. 17, with Manchester and Tippecanoe Valley.

the game out at the end. Senior Mike Eastman brought the Warriors even —for the first time since intermission — with a key rebound basket with 5:33 remaining in the game. The next couple of minutes were key in the outcome of the game. After a Jim Jullierat fielder failed to find the mark, Darin Atwood gave the Warriors their first lead of the game, 46-44, with 5:11 remaining. The junior, who earlier in the game fell to the hardwood and chipped a tooth, blocked out the pain and canned a 17-foot jumper. The Warriors increased their lead seconds latert— thanks to their defense. Enforcing a half-court trap defense, Tim Mangas and Atwood trapped Whitko’s Mike Kline at midcourt, stripped the ball away, and Mangas scored inside the paint. The bucket gave Wawasee its largest lead of the night, 48-44. Whitko, however, closed the gap very quickly. Jamie Vandersaul sank two consecutive field goals in the final minute to bring the Wildcats within one, 52-51. After Atwood, Wawasee’s best foul shooter, iailed to hit the tront end of the bonus, Kline pushed the ball upcourt and hit a short jumper. The Whitko field goal gave the visitors a 53-52 advantage with 18 seconds left in the contest.

Harter's freebies save Warriors

KENDALLVILLE - It was a good basketball game for the Wawasee Warriors to win. Coming off an emotional 54-53 victory over Whitko, Wawasee used two free throws from Brett Harter to claim a 46-44 nonconference high school boys basketball victory at East Noble. The win improves the Warriors’ record to 12-4. • Although the game was close the entire distance, the Warriors still controlled the contest. Wawasee led after the first break, 14-6, but only 22-18 at halftime.

But the Warriors didn’t quit. Instead, Mangas rushed the ball into the Warriors’ offensive end. Approaching the paint, Mangas passed to Eastman, who scored the game-winning field goal with 13 seconds left. Whitko’s last-ditch effort to pull out the victory ended when Vandersaul, attempting to drive the baseline, was called for an offensive foul. The charging foul came with two seconds left in the game. The foul sealed Wawasee’s victory, and ended its longest losing skid of the season. “I didn’t think there was any , contact,” said Patrick, about Vandersaul’s charging foul at the end. “I think he just faked it. If anything, it should have gone the other way.” But it didn’t. Rather, it was the break the Warriors desperately needed to claim the victory. Nathan Rhoades and Mangas were Wawasee’s offensive stars — both scoring 18 points. Rhoades, while adding a spectacular defensive game, missed only four shots — all from the field — in the game. Whitko was led, offensively, by Kline’s 25 points. Dave Irwin, while scoring 14 points, was the oniy other wildcat in aouoie digits. Slow Start « “I was concerned early because I didn’t think we were really in the game,” added Goshert. “We got going, then,

But a poor third period almost cost the Warriors the victory. East Noble, trailing third period, outscored the visitors 12-6 in the frame to hold a 30-28 advantage going into the final eight minutes. But Harter came through with his two freebies with :09 remaining to hand the Warriors the victory. Tim Mangas led the winners with 21 points, while Nathan Rhoades added 11 for the Warriors. Mike Eastman and Harter both contributed six points for Wawasee.
