FEA features smoking education program
The American Lung Association’s Smoking Education program was presented at the North Webster Elementary school Tuesday afternoon by Ann Vitaniemi and Kristina Lange. Vitaniemi and Lange are students at Wawasee High School, and members of the Future Educators of America club. The local FEA group has 26 future teachers Xn it most of which are participating in the smoking education program. The program was started in 1972, and uses high school students that are interested in being future teachers, to teach grades four and five the effects of smoking. This "survey" of sorts was part of the Home Sweet Home Celebration held Thursday, January 15th at Miller's. Festivities included a noon banquet with invocation by Chaplain Norm Helfers. Piano selections were provided by Gladys Boice, Cleo Shafer and Gladys Haas — all residents. Those residents having lived here more than 5 years were adorned with an Olympic type medal. On the medallion was the number of years each resident has been a resident of this home. In all there were twenty. The resident who has been here the longest is Miss Helen Dederick. Helen has been in our Miller's home for 17 years. "There is no place like home" it's true, but at Miller's Merry Manor, Inc., Warsaw, every possible effort is taken to make it as much "like home" as possible. ..fashion. And that if they smoke, in time they also could have a hard-time breathing. A smoking simulator, better known as a smoking dummy, was used to simulate the effects done to the lungs by smoking. The lungs were removed so that students were able to see the amount of smoke and nicotine in them. A graph and visuals, were shown to the students in order to encourage better understanding and questions. And they had plenty of questions. However most seemed to know a great deal about the harm that smoking does to the smoker, but were concerned about what second hand smoke could do to them. To this question, Lange and Vitaniemi, explained the amount of harm that can be done without frightening the students. Ann Vitaniemi is planning to to attend Purdue College, and hopes'
to teach third or fourth grade elementary students. She states that she has always wanted to be a teacher, and that she feels that participating in FEA is good training. Kristina Lange is also interested in teaching but has not yet decided if its for her. She’s
