sition program is to assist with personal growth by teaching four major self-sufficiency components. These components are: self-nurturance; time and money management; basic home and car care; and problem solving skills. Self-nurturance is considered the most important or “core” component of the WIT workshop. The primary factor in the success of personal growth is one’s concept of self and what one is willing to do to work toward that self-concept. sonal handicaps keep one from meeting her goals. Such handicaps could include: nonassertiveness; shyness; inability to set goals; difficulty in making decisions; lack of motivation; low self-esteem; problems with communication or difficulties with problem solving. The first step toward self-help is to determine strengths and weaknesses. The next step is to establish the types of influences that have shaped one’s present coping styles. Some influences may include value systems, religion, past experience, family patterns of coping, interaction with one’s peers, legal issues, and educational background. The next step is problem solving. In this stage one weighs the pluses and minuses of the problem, determines the goals one wants to achieve and generates options for achieving the goal(s). Finally, the last step is to choose from the possible options and take action or plan to act. The outcome of these steps will be adaptation. Self-help classes encourage adaptation by teaching coping skills. By making positive adjustments to problems one is able to guide his or her life in the desired direction. Self-help classes, such as Women in Transition, create a non-threatening
