Plymouth hands Warriors five-point NLC loss
PLYMOUTH — It was almost like Christmas for Wawasee’s girls basketball team Tuesday evening. The host Plymouth Pilgrims tried to give away a Northern Lakes Conference basketball game. The only problem, though, Wawasee was not willing to take the gift. The Warriors, 4-11, missed 18-of-28 free throws as they dropped a 47-42 NLC game at Plymouth. Wawasee, with the loss, have dropped nine straight games. ; “If we could have hit our foul shots, we would have won,” admitted Wawasee head coach Dale Brannock. “But it’s one of those things. We’ll be okay.” The game was evenly played during the first eight minutes, but once the Warriors entered the second stanza, it was downhill. /. Plymouth increased its 9-8 first period lead to 25-1 La t the half. At that point, it appeared Plymouth would have no problems defeating the Warriors. But it turned out to be a struggle for the Pilgrims. Wawasee, enforcing a full court press, moved back into contention in the third period. The defensive pressure forced

Plymouth into several turnovers that resulted in easy tyawasee field goals. In the period, the Warriors outscored the host 20-8, bringing the Syracuse club within two, 33-31, entering the final period. With momentum on its side, Wawasee continued with the press, and easy buckets. The Warriors, eventually, erased the 14-point halftime deficit by taking a 37-35 lead early in the final period. But that’s when Wawasee’s thrust ended. Plymouth regained its composure and controlled the tempo the rest of the game. A balanced scoring attack aided Wawasee’s cause. Lai Reed led the Warriors with 13 points. Meanwhile, Ann Vitaniemi scored 10 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and Kelly Brooks added nine points and seven boards. Amy Barton finished the contest with seven rebounds and four points. The Warriors close out their regular season Saturday afternoon when they host West Noble. The junior varsity game begins at 1 p.m. In the junior varsity contest at Plymouth, the Pilgrims held on to edge the Warriors, 28-27.

A more detailed list will be available at a later date. Tickets are presently on sale at the Wawasee High School athletic office, and a few other selected locations. Price for admission is $5.
