LOUISA'S LETTER (nrj)

Dear Louisa, My husband is very strict with our son. He expects him to make very high marks in school and thinks the boy should be punished if he fails. I feel that he’s doing our son a great deal of harm, for the boy studies hard but doesn’t come up to his father’s standards for him. My husband is a very smart man and has always been very quick to learn anything he attempts, but while, our son isn’t dull he’s not brilliant. What can I do a bout'this? — N.C. Answer: Your husband may have a brilliant mind, but he is not smart in his treatment of his son. Some children are smart in one way and slow in others. What a child can accomplish depends to some extent on his original endowment. He should be encouraged to do his best — within his

capabilities — but not pushed beyond that. As I have written before, a child has to have a motive in order to learn anything, and if that motive is strong enough he Will keep on trying, after many failures, in order to succeed. When he does succeed this will encourage him to go on to other problems. But if the child is given a goal which is impossible to attain, regardless of his persistence, he becomes discouraged and frustrated and will lack the assurance these things which are possible for him to do. If a child does his best and makes a B or even a C instead of an A he should receive praise instead of punishment. It is possible that he has other gifts just as important in the long run as brilliances in formal education. Louisa Address letters: Louisa, Box 532, Orangeburg, S.C. 29115
