Turkey Creek Township . ; ■ ■■ Trustee ends successful term

J By MARK HUFFMAN Staff Writer When Louis Kuilema was a young boy growing up in Kalamazoo, Mich., it wasn't uncommon to see him pounding nails into wood, building toys and other similar objects to pass the time. Several years later and more than a few mites—. away, the retired salesman is putting the end to another building project, that of helping the poor of Turkey Creek Township through funding and emergency relief. As township trustee for the past four years, the Syracuse resident also has been in charge of maintaining the township’s six abandoned cemeteries/ accounting for adequate fire and ambulance ser--4 vice, and settling farmer disputes over fence lines. “That is one of my lesser known duties, but we did have one case while I was in office,” he admits. Those duties are being transferred to newlyelected trustee Alice Johnston as she learns the procedures. “I’ll be sitting in with her for about a month until she becomes more familiar with the job,” Kuilema says, shuffling through papers in his familiar habitat — the town hall. Retired from the Vega Corporation, town officials asked the veteran salesman to run for trustee in 1983, assuring him that it would “only take a couple days a week.” After securing the post, Kuilema soon found that those “couple days” would turn into a full time job. “It turned out to be a five-day and seven-night a i week job,” he says, adding, “It’s a much bigger job \ than a lot of people realize.” . However, Kuilema isn’t foreign to long hours, having served on the town board in the mid 19705, while shuffling in his job at Vega and the operation of the Fish & Fun Resort — which was nothing more

than a collection of run-down shanties before he purchased the land after moving from Indianapolis. “I had just retired from selling laboratory equipment and was looking for a fishing resort when I saw an advertisement in the newspaper telling about one in Syracuse,” he says, confessing that he had no idea where the town was previous to that advertisement. A former resident of Wilmington, Del.; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Chicago, Kuilema made his final move after purchasing the resort in 1965 and restoring it to a popular vacation site. “One couple had twin boys who used to come every year,” he says, remembering the episode that caused them to adopt the resort. “The boys were complaining about nothing to do so I fixed up two old bamboo poles and. took them out to the end of the dock to fish — they thought that was great,” he says with a sheepish grin. Such stories aren’t uncommon for Kuilema, who admits a fondness for “helping people have fun.” Kuilema sold the rlfeort 10 years ago, but still enjoys fishing and helping people — the trustee's position serving evidence of the later affliction. k f*A lot of people call me at home late at night, expecting me to come over and take care of their problems ‘right then,’ but other than that it’s (trustee position) been enjoyable,” he says. Nevertheless, the stout man admits that one term more than filled his appetite. “When you get to be my age you begin to want to slow down a bit,” he says, hoping to spend more time with his wife, Jacqueline, of 50 years. However, given the personable laker's background, it’s unlikely that he’ll ever fully slow down — he’ll just start building again.

DearLousa, My husband and I separated several years ago and the children divide their time living with us. He lives, in a larger town and I live in a rural community where there is very little entertainment and very few young people. My problem is this: I know the children love me as much or more than they do their father but here lately they spend more

Brenda Vanlaningham was in charge of the program. , Several of the members were asked to be one of the people in the original Christmas event and were interviewed as to how they felt about that night in Bethlehem. time with him. The oldest one told me that .there is nothing to do here but walk in the woods and that they have many good friends in town and there is always interesting things to see and places to go. What can I do about this situation? I feel like I am losing my children. Mother — Ga. Answer: I assume that your children must be teenagers and it is a fact that most young people of that age are more concerned about their friends young activities than they are with their parents. If you have a good relationship with your youngsters and there is love between #ou and then), you need not worry about losing them. It is not the amount of time that they spend with you that counts but what love and happiness they find when they are in your home. Louisa Address letters: Louisa Box 432, Orangeburg, 5.C.29115.
