Humanly speaking-
Change in role of family
By DAVID BLANKE, M.S. Wabash Satellite Office, Bowen Center Question: Are families structured differently today than they ’ were twenty-five years ago? There has been a noticeable change in the traditional role of family members the last twentyfive years. The traditional role for the husband was that of the bread winner. He saw himself as the control person, the one responsible for the family’s survival. The wife saw her role as the care giver. She raised the children and was general supervisor of household affairs. This was probably the family structure most people, who are past forty years of age, were familiar with. The only change in this structure occurred when a parent died. Divorce was not a common event because of economic reasons an publicoutcry. These roles of husband/wife functioning are presently being changed for the twenty to forty age group. Today many families find it necessary-to have both husband and wife employed. When the wife works in the job market, the responsibilities and values of the family are shifted. It is difficult for many husbands to accept the fact that the husband’s role is no longer that of being the sole bread winner. He is now asked to share an equal load in care giving to the children and responsibilities for household duties. Besides rejecting the latter tasks as “women’s work”, his sense of value of himself is now altered. He is no longer able to

support his family as his father had done. It is not any easier for the wife. She was taught by her mother to be the primary care giver and in charge of household matters. She was to leave the finances to her husband. Now she is in the labor force. These changing roles and value systems have brought about many families conflicts. Today’s families are setting up new role models and value systems different from their parents./For some families the stress is too severe and divorce is the result. Divorce ,is now possible economically and is without social outcry or stigma. Families can be guided through these tough times by professionals skilled to work with conflict management and marital discord. Individual and family therapy is available from the staff at the Bowen Center. The Spring Workshop Series has a number of opportunities for individual and family growth.
