A visit toy he Holy Land — Jordan andJsrael
I By M. LYNN GRAY ’ Guest Writer »• Most of us read the Biblical account of the birth of Christ and are content to imagine the surroundings into which He was born. We might dream of visiting the Holy Land, but dreams are as far as we get. Several area residents were not satisfied with just reading of these lands involved in the text of the Bible. They actually made the trip to Israel and Jordan to walk where He.had walked. On November 28,1986, fourteen Kosciusko County residents flew from Fort Wayne to John F. Kennedy airport, where they met 13 people from Ohio. This contingent had ample time to visit and get acquainted as the jumbo 747 out of Europe had been socked in by fog and was late in arriving. . Rev. Brian Campbell and his wife, Carol, also a United Methodist minister, served as tour hosts, as they had made the trip to the Holy Lands in 1980. This time they were taking their two children, Ivan and Christia, both students in the Whitko School system. Mrs. Troup hostess for Silver Thimbles The Silver Thimble Club met January 5 at the home of Mrs. William Troup. The meeting was called to order by President Mrs. Robert Beer. Reports were given by Mrs. Sam Beer, Mrs. Alvin Haab, Mrs. Ray Haab, and Mrs. Phil Price. Many thank yous were read by the club members. Refreshments were served by the hostess. Guests were Sherri Beer, Angie Higginbotham, Cris McDaniel, and Kim Troup.

After a 14-hour flight to Amman, Jordan, the tour group disembarked from the plane to meet its tour guide, Joseph, who would guide the visitors through their nine-day visit. One of the things that Carol and Brian both emphasized was the strict security measures that were encountered throughout the group’s travels. With tourism as the number one industry, Israel and Jordan aren’t going to take any chances on danger to their guests, There were four check-points to be encountered when entering or leaving either of .the countries and metal detectors, handbag and suitcase searches, as well as physical frisking were the common precautionary actions taken. In one case, a camera was aimed at the ceiling and a picture taken to insure that there were no explosives in the mechanism. With all the newspaper writeups on terrorism, bombings, threats and kidnappings, the security measures could be appreciated. But the fact remains that the group never saw or heard any of the fighting. Joseph simply met with Brian and others of the group to plan strategy to go around the fighting sectors to visit what was clear for the day. By this method of planning ahead, the group was able to see such places as the Tomb in the Garden of Gethsemane, Golgatha, the Pool of Bethesda (the healing pool), Mount of Ascension, Valley of Gehenna (where Judas hanged himself), Bethlehem, Nazareth, Mount of Beatitudes (Sermon on the Mount), Valley of Megiddo (future site of the battle of Armageddon), Capernaum bn the Sea of Galilee (No city, just excavated ruins-Jesus had cursed, the city for its lack of faith), Via Del a Rosa (Way of the Cross) and the Mount of Olives. While visiting the Wailing Wall (part of the original outer temple wall in Jerusalem), the Campbells were made aware of the differences in customs. All the orthodox Jewish women wore long

black dresses and head covers. Visiting women were not allowed to wear shorts or skimpy tops, although slacks were all right. Also at the wall, Brian was able to visit the more religious areas of the excavations. This separation of men from women goes back to Bible times, when only high priests were allowed in the holy of holies. Women had to remain in the outer courtyard. One of the most unique sights the group encountered were the travelling Bedouin tribes of the deserts. It would not be uncommon to see a black goatskin tent with a TV antenna sticking from its ridge opening. Outside would be a shiny new Mercedes Benz. Maybe the elusive, travelling bands have the right idea-income

tax rates are 55.8 percent! The year 1986 was a good year for the agricultural fortunes of the area farmers and shepherds. The normal annual rainfall is one-inch, but this year they had three inches. Since most of the farmers have from two to three hundred head of sheep, going for upwards of S2OO per head, they have much to be grateful for this year. Nazareth Nazareth was the city where Mary lived when the angel visited her to tell of the son she would give birth to. It was also the hometown of Jesus as he grew up. Modern day Nazareth is composed of one third Jewish, one third Moslem and one third Christian. This is the largest Christian

While visiting Nazareth, thegroup was able to drop off missionary supplies to a minister from Anderson and deliver a gift, a pair of Superman pajamas, to the minister’s adopted Arab son. Bethlehem Bethlehem was the only area visited that showed any signs of the holiday spirit. One string of lights was even observed near the manger area in the Church of the Nativity. Three times a day, members of the Catholic faith hold services in the manger area. Other groups that share the church are the Armenian and the Coptic groups. Most of the holy areas are shared equally among several religious faiths. Scheduling must be

adhered to, as Friday and Saturday are holy days for some religions, while Sunday is chosen by others. _ The main Christian Sunday service is held in the evening due to other religious groups’ use and the work- schedules of the congregation. The visiting group was able to partake in several meaningful Christian experiences while in the Holy Lands. These included baptism by immersion in the Sea of Galilee, near the mouth of the Jordan River where Jesus had been baptized by John the Baptist. Wedding vows were reaffirmed in the Franciscan Church in Cana. This city was where Jesus visited the wedding feast and performed his first miracle, turning water into wine. While visiting the Garden Tomb, the members of the group were able to partake of Holy Communion. The wine was served in olive wood cups and the bread was unleavened, or Matza bread. The tomb area and Golgotha are both under British control and ministers from various denominations take turns on a 12-month tour of duty as tomb chaplain. The rest of the Holy Lands are under Jewish control, as far as the points of interest are concerned. - When asked about litter and polution problems, Brian and Carol said there are none. The streets are swept twice daily and there is a stiff penalty for anyone caught littering. A camel can’t pay a fine, but his owner had better clean up any mess left on the street! the site of the three first satellite dishes in the Middle East. Although built in 1965, these dishes are still state of the art. The main industry remains tourism. Joseph, a member of the PLO, has been a guide for 25 years. He and his wife live in. modern Jerusalem and have no children. He took Christia and Ivan under his wing and showed them many things not usually viewed by the average tourist. In addition to his talent for getting the group into areas without conflict, Joseph also spoke six languages, including English and Spanish. About Some Travelers Christia, age 12 and in the sixth grade at Whitko Middle School, was most impressed by the food. She found it to be better than expected. The food made up for the water which, due to the high mineral content, could not be widely consumed. In Amman, Jordan, a McDonald’s and a Pizza Hut could be found. A medium pizza cost S3O. All American style food was expensive. Christia. hated the navy blue uniforms the school girls had to wear. The boys didn’t have any clothing regulations imposed on them. Ivan, age eight and in the third grade at-Whitko Elementary, found the scale model city of Jerusalem to be fascinating. A hotel owner in Jerusalem took several years to construct the one to 50 scale model of the city as it would have appeared in the time of Christ. Christia’s interests include track, jazz music, tap dance and Little League softball (Dodgers). Ivan was a member of the 1986 T-ball champs (Astros) and is also interested in baseball. He is a participant in the gifted and talented program at his school. The kids found such sports as volleyball and swimming in Israel and soccer in Jordan. News arrived from home and. the tour members became aware of the Whitko football championship. They were undoubtedly some of the most remote fans to
