Officer trades uniform for plain clothes
I By M ARK HUFFMAN Staff Writer Recognized throughout Syracuse by his blue uniform and the badge it carries, Syracuse Police Officer Bob Houser. Sr . will feature a different look in 1987 — trading that uniform for plain clothes and a new title. Profile A man who has filled virtually every capacity at the Syracuse Police Department during his 16 years of service. Houser will become the town's first full time detective at the turn of the new year “Bob is one of the oldest on the department, lives in town, and is the best qualified for the position.” explains Police Chief Robert Ziller. who initiated the undercover program to further investigate burglaries, felonies, and misdemeanors A full-time officer since 1975, Houser joined the department as a reserve officer tn 1970 Appointed to the position of sergeant in 1979. he followed that stint with a two year term, 1980-82, as town marshal — resigning from that post to return to the streets as a patrolman A low-keyed individual. Houser shuns publicity in a position earmarked for attention, but his experiencedemands respect

“I’m not carved out to be a detective — I’m a road man," he admits, adding, “But, I'll give it a whirl ” The Muncie native has given police work “a whirl” off and on for about 32 years, serving in the reserves in Middletown U.S.A, before moving further north in 1967 A former welding shop owner, Houser sold interests in that field in 1975 after joining the depart ment ”1 like the variety of police work — no case is ever the same,” he says of the occupation that has drawn him back lime after time That same enthusiasm has followed in his family , with son Bob, Jr , becoming a full-time officer in September, after serving two years as a reserve A second son, Phillip, was killed in an auto accident in 1978, leaving a void in the senior officer's life Currently living in Syracuse with his wife of 36 years, JoAnn, Houser will also assume the duties of Ziller upon his absence "Bob will be second in charge in the department, taking over when I’m gone, ” the chief confirms Developing the position out of "need,” Ziller feels a detective will help the town solve some burglaries that may not have previously had the ad ded manpower "Now that we have six full-time of ficers we can devote the extra time," he says, ad ding, "Syracuse is the second biggest town in the county and is modernizing — the police department must modernize w ith it
