Family rituals and traditions
I MRS. DONNA FI LLER. K.V.. Psychiatric Nurse At this time of year we are often very busy with projects and activities centered around seasonal celebrations. Many ot these activities are viewed as rituals or traditions and often are family-oriented. A family ritual could be defined as an action or a series of actions performed in a certain manner and sequence that may or may not be accompanied by verbal material. The family ritual contains an element of emotional experience, has symbolic value and is performed with great involvement. If the emotional component is missing it is an empty ritual. Family rituals are symbolic actions which serve to define social relationships. roles and status within the family unit. Let’s consider several familiar traditions’, How about the national tradition of having turkey at Thanksgiving 9 Or having the head of the family seated at a designated spot at the table 9 ThirJi of whose role, or job, it is to carve the turkey Who usually is involved with purchasing the Christmas tree 9 Whose job is it to put the lights on the tree 9 Who brings a special food to every family Christmas, dinner? And is it a tradition for a certain familymember to receive a specific gift 9 Possibly there is a routine trip to Grandma's on a specific day each holiday, or family church attendance another day. A one time ritual can also serve the purpose of right of passage which enables the family or individual to make the transition from one phase of life to the next This is demonstrated by the example of the oldest son taking over father’s role in the family after the father dies, even sitting in father’s spot at the table at family gatherings. Each person can think of numerous examples within his/her family and extended family that have been followed for several generations, often becoming a habit that is automatically practiced without thinking. These family rituals that are holiday-oriented serve several Stop Sign. Our familiar brown and gold sign can mean a lot to you when you're looking for a home. purposes. They can serve to draw a family closer year after year so that even when geographical distance separates the family, each member can recall tradi tional practices which substitute as an emotional closeness. The recall can be a satisfying thing, but it can also be a trauma to those families where emotional ties have been severed. But the point is that an established ritual will ignite memories of the fami ly unit. Currently there is much con cern over the decline of moral fibre in America and for the demise of the family unit. In our society many have given up long

First picture In the 1863 edition of Harper’s Weekly and a book of Christmas poems, the first Santa Claus picture was printed for the first time. Thomas Nast, a 23-year-old German immigrant, was to become Santa’s most famous artist. After being portrayed as the Dutch Santa of Washington Irving's “Knickerbocker History", Santa now became the Santa of “The Night Before Christmas." He was now fat and jolly, decked out in a red suit with a wide leather belt, boots, and of course, a white, fluffy beard. (Note: Nast also went on to become famous as he was the designer of the Democratic donkey and the Republican elephant.
