Warriors rout upset-minded Eagles

SYRACUSE — For Wawasee’s boys’ basketball team, the game with Columbia City was just a tune up for Concord. For Columbia City, it was a chance to upset the Warriors the night before the Warriors' big game with the Minutemen. But the upset never happened. The Warriors, focusing on the Eagles this particular evening, not Minutemen, put together a solid defensive effort, with a steady offensive showing to romp past the Eagles, 72-53, here Friday evening. With the win, Wawase improves its overall record to 7-0. Columbia City falls to 1-5. Tn securing its seventh straight victory, Wawasee used the same ingredients it has all season — solid defense with an uptempo style offense. “I saw some good defense out there — we blocked out well and

got the ball inside/’ said Wawasee’s Gary Goshert. “I feel very good about what we did out there tonight and the players who ended the game I also felt good about.” Leading the Warriors’ victory march was, as usual, Tim Mangas and Fred Steffen. Mangas, in scoring a game-high 27 points, scored many of his points after a steal and fastbreak layup. Steffen, on the other hand, helped the Warriors dominate the boards (a Wawasee 43-26 edge in rebounds) as he grabbed 11 rebounds, many off the offensive glass and converted them into easy buckets. The 6-3 center finished the evening with 22 points. However, the game was not always uptempo in nature. As a matter of fact, it started very slowly.

But the Warriors would get one more chance. Northridge's L'landa Troyer, who led the Raiders with 11 points, canned the first of her charity tosses, but failed to connect on the latter with five seconds remaining. In that period, Wawasee outscored the Eagles 23-13, and forged a comfortable 56-33 lead entering the final eight minutes of action. Mangas ignited the Warriors’ third period onslaught by scoring 15 of his 27 points in the frame. Because of Mangas’ scoring, and Wawasee’s swarming defense, Columbia City was unable to comeback in the fourth quarter — even with substitutes playing for the Warriors. “I told the kids before the game to concentrate on playing sound defense and getting to the boards,” said Wawasee’s Gary Goshert, following the win. “The offensive opportunities would come (by playing sound defense). The Eagles, in shooting from the perimeter, managed just 17 of 61 shots for 28%.
