Establishing credit rights

By WARREN LYONS In the age of credit, it's wise for women to establish and maintain their own credit history. Women should be aware of their credit rights as established under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act in 1975. • Women cannot be required to reapply for credit because of marriage, divorce, or death of spouse.

Cherished Christmas traditions

I By MARIETTA F. HENRY Extension Home Economist Much of the delight of Christmas centers on traditions we cherish from one year to the next. Sometimes, the traditions are so old that we no longer remember how they began — only that they give us special pleasure as we continue them from year to year Have you ever wondered how the Christmas tree or nutcracker evolved into a popular holiday tradition We can thank the Germans for the wonderful custom of having Christmas trees, although the general use of evergreen bran ehes during winter celebrations can be traced back as far as Roman times. Then they were considered a symbol of life and good luck Among the earliest German tree ornaments were gilt nuts, tiny candles a symbol of Christ as the Light of the World >. apples i for the story of Adam and Eve in Paradise plays ’ and white wafers to represent the communion ser vices. As years passed, the decorations grew more fanciful, leading one writer to rave over the ‘gold and silver walnuts, trinkets, and miniature toys of every tion. baubles and glitter, cakes and cookies and spangled confection." It took the power of the press to start a Christmas tree tradition in England Prince Albert, eon sort to Queen Victoria, first introduced the custom at Windsor Castle in 1841 Before that. Ger man royalty living in England had Christmas trees in thenhomes But it was not until the Illustrated London News featured an efigraxjjjgof the royal family around a / tree in 1848 that tnesjashion caught on in English households Today, while modern innova lions have been made, such as electric lights for candles and mass-produced ornaments replacing homemade ones, traditional decorations continue to be prized for their old-fashioned charm Dutch children put out wooden shoes on Christmas Eve filled with straw for St Nicholas' horse and an apple for his servant. Black Pete When they awaken Christmas morning, the children find that the offerings have miraculously disappeared and in their place are candy, cookies and small toys. Cakes of fruit and nuts were prized throughout Europe Our American fruitcakes are descended from English recipes When the custom of fruitcakes was first established, cakes of any kind were a rare treat only for very special occasions; and fruits, especially during the winter months, were a true prize Even a single orange, so common in supermarkets today, was a wondrous gift to a child The earliest nutcrackers were basically hammer or club-like devices They cracked the shells, but crumbled the nut. too By the mid-18W)s. cast iron animal nut crackers were introduced. You put the nut in the animal's jaw and used the tail as a lever to app

Food additives

Space age technology is quickly taking over the food industry with noticeably healthful results Scientists are developing substitutes for fats, sugar and salt that taste just like the real things, without unhealthy side effects. such as weight-gain, hypertension or tooth decay One fat substitute in development is called sucrose polyester Sucrose polyester would significantly reduce oil and cholesterol content in such pro ducts as butter and mayonnaise Normal fat contains three fatty acids Sucrose polyester contains eight fatty acids which makes it too dense for the body to break down It therefore passes through the system without being digested Another breakthrough product already available is aspartame, the nutritive sweetener marketed under the brand name. NutraSweet. Aspartame was created from two ammo acids that occur naturally in other foods It is nearly 200 times sweeter than sugar, so onlv a Retirement bill Fresident Reagan, who is scheduled to retire in two years at age 77. has signed into law a bill making it illegal for most employers to set a mandatory retirement age The bill, adopted unanimously in the closing hours of the congressional session, makes it illegal for companies w ith more than 20 employees to set a mandatory retirement age
