Humanly speaking —
illness that's seasonal
An

At this time of year, and also in the spring, the changes in the mood of people suffering from a bipolar illness (manic-depressive illness), tend to surface. It is not scientifically known why this occurs in the spring and fall but statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health show that at these two changes of seasons people with a diagnosed bipolar illness are more vulnerable. What is a bipolar illness? This question can most simply be answered by comparing this group of people with the average person in society. The comparison shows that these people react to stress in a more exaggerated manner than the usual person. Eaach of us has good days and bad days, that is considered normal. Good days might be when Warsaw High School wins a basketball game. Bad days might be when an athlete is not allowed to participate in the sport of his choice. Bad days are when people burn the coffee, good days are when there is an unexpected increase in the tax refund. This falls within the normal range of mood swings. The next step is that of a psychiatrically termed cyclothymic personality, in which their good days are on a much higher level; and if it continues past a 72-hour period of time, minor tranquilizers might be used to stabilize their mood. Their bad days are characterized by thoughts of self-harm or selfdestruction, but no particular acr nww ■ Jk 0 . /e»n HP* tytjoue May the peace and joy of that very first Christmas be with you throughout this Holiday Season and after. ting out on these thoughts. If their depressed mood continues over a period of time an antidepressant medication may be used to stabilize their mood. The next escalation of these symptoms leads one to the diagnosis of a bipolar illness, in which their good days, or their

highs, are characterized by unlimited energy. Sleep, for all practical purposes, is considered a waste of time. One to two hours sleep is all that is necessary, and these people accomplish a remarkable series of projects which would totally exhaust the usual person. Their thoughts
come at an exaggerated speed so that it is difficult for them to concentrate on any one subject for more than a few seconds. They tend to spend money recklessly as if recouping the money is of no big consequence in their life. They are extremely egocentric, knowing full well that they have the solution to any and all of the world’s problems if only the rest of society would listen to them. There does not seem to be any rationale to this exaggerated sense of well being. Contrast this with their depressed symptoms when they are absolutely withdrawn and life is not worth living. They not only think of self destruction but are most apt to make bonafide suicidal attempts. They withdraw into themselves, become terribly suspicious of others and, in essence, feel absolutely miserable. This, then, is the profile of a person suffering from bipolar illness. There is usually a genetic or hereditary link with these people. They also are always very driven to succeed throughout their life or, in essence, they are overachievers. There is, with careful history taking, a very strong probability that the first episode of either a manic or depressive phase occurred in late adolescence. These people are intelligent and very self-motivated. The treatment of choice in a bipolar illness is that of Lithium Carbonate. It is always advantageous to involve family members in the treatment regimen. One over-riding factor in involving family members in the treatment program is to make them aware of the vulnerable periods — spring and fall when these people tend to have an increase in symptoms. NIPSCO to omit divident Northern Indiana Public Service Company’s Board of Directors omitted declaration of a quarterly dividend on its common stock which would have been payable in February 1987. The board noted depressed industrial sales levels, which have been negatively impacted by the continuing work stoppage at USX Corporation, and other current uncertainties in delaying payment of dividends. Resumption of the dividend is a high corporate priority. NIPSCO has not declared a quarterly common dividend since December 1985 following an adverse decision by the Indiana Supreme Court which denied amortization of about sl9l million invested in the canceled Bailly N-l project.
