North Wood dominates Wawasee in NLC clash
NAPPANEE - The North Wood girls’ basketball team continued its winning ways Monday, Dec. 15, when the host Panthers had little trouble in defeating Wawasee, 54-27. With the wm, North Wood improves its record to 5-3, overall, and 3-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Meanwhile, the Warriors dropped their season mark to 4-4, and 1-2 in the NLC. The contest between the schools never materialized into much more than a rout. From the outset, the Warriors’ inability to rebound, and shoot effectively from the perimeter, hindered Wawasee’s chances of winning. The Panthers outrebounded the Warriors, 40-24, for the contest. The majority of Northwood’s rebounds came at their offensive end of the court. “We didn’t play anywhere close to our potential,’’ insisted Wawasee’s Dale Brannock. "They simply outrebounded us, outhustled us. and outplayed us. We just looked very tired.” After taking a 14-6 advantage after one period, the Panthers in-

creased their margin to 12 at the half, 22-10. That was the closest Wawasee could come to the powerful Panthers. North Wood, behind Tonya Wiggins’ 12 points, pulled further ahead of the tired Warriors in the third stanza. During the period, which Wawasee usually plays well in, the Panthers canned several perimeter shots to break away from Wawasee. The period was completely different than the second and fourth periods. During those quarters, the Panthers dominated the boards in gaining second and third scoring opportunities. “We didn’t rebound well at all,’’stated Brannock. “I can’t explain why we played like we did. It just happened. ” Ann Vitamemi led the sluggish Wawasee attack with 12 points. No other Warrior reached double digits. Kelly Brooks was held to six points, all in the first half. Wawasee’s next action is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 20, with Northridge.
Both teams scored five points in the first two extra periods, but the Warriors added six in the final session to gain the win. Koble led the Warriors with 16 points, while Jeff Carey chipped in 15 for Wawasee. The Warriors added another victory over the weekend, a 57-51 triumph over Triton.

Joining the center, offensively, is 6-3 senior Troy Meyers. The talented forward enters this weekend with a 14 point scoring average. That might be true, but so far, people have tried that, and we’ve only lost once. The key to Concord’s offense is

their attack of the basket. When attacking the basket, the Minutemen possess the patience to work the ball for an open shot. Meanwhile, they can play a transition style of game and speed up the tempo. “We do whatever we have to do to win,” added Hahn. “Whatever the situation calls for, that’s what we like to do. ” However, in Wawasee’s contest Saturday, the Warriors would like to push the ball upcourt as much as possible. “That suits us fine,” insisted Hahn, concerning a up tempo contest with the Warriors. "They may be a little quicker than us, but I feel we will be able to stay with them. All I want to be is in position at the end to win. If that happens. I’ll be happy.” [lf both teams try to ‘run and gun’, the

key to the contest could be Tim Mangas’ ability to run Wawasee’s transition game. Hobbled by a twisted ankle a week ago, Mangas was not at full strength in either game last weekend. He will need to be against Concord. “We need to be able to control Mangas,” said Hahn. “He can do a lot of things well for them. If we slow him down, we could be in good shape.” Whatever happens, this Northern Lakes Conference clash appears to be the best game of the season. “It should be an exciting basketball game,” said Goshert early in the week. “They are a fine basketball team, with or without Kemp.
