Leesburg Candleria Sunday

By GLEN LONG Staff Writer The Christmas program in Leesburg on Sunday, Dec. 21, will truly be a community celebration. The two churches in town, Grace Brethren and United Methodist, are joining with Leesburg residents, merchants and businessmen to make the Candleria even more enjoyable and meaningful than last year with the addition of the nativity program The public is invited to join with Leesburg residents in this beautiful Christmas observance. “I’m happy the community can work together to present a program that tells the true story of Christmas, ” said Rev. Dale Mendenhall, pastor of Leesburg United Methodist Church. I hope the community supports this because it could become a meaningful tradition each year." ■ Rev. William Smith, pastor of Grace Brethren Church in Leesburg, agreed and stated, “I think it’s wonderful that our two churches have the opportunity to join together in presenting the nativity scenes. It warms my heart w hen people's thoughts are centered on the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Jesus, our Lord." J. W. Heierman, vice president/cashier of Peoples State N Bank in Leesburg and president of the Leesburg Merchants and Business Association, complimented the Candleria committee for its efforts. “The strong cooperation it. takes, to put on a project of this size pulls a community together," he said. “It gives one a warm feeling for his town when he sees the churches, residents and business people working together to put on a program which people from other tow ns can also enjoy .' ’ “We hope this type celebration will be able to be held each year in the future and encourage continued community spirit as has been shown this year," Heierman continued “I hope all people remember the true meaning of

Christmas, the birth of Jesus, the Christ Child, who came into the world for all people. ” Norma Hayes, publicity chairman for the Leesburg association, commented that the Candleria, now in its second year, is a super effort to generate good community feeling in Leesburg. She said the addition of the nativity program will “round out” the evening and, with both churches involved, will put the Candleria in a proper perspective. About 50 people, including a chorus and 20 costumed actors, will present a program relating to the birth of Jesus. Volunteers will re-enact scenes of the Nativity story as the Biblical account is read by Rev. Dale Mendenhall and Rev. Bill Smith. The Biblical re-enactment will take place through streets of Leesburg, beginning at Stanley Steemer at 6:30 p.m. and traveling to Leesburg Elementary School via the town hall. The nativity program will follow the lighting of 2,000 candles lining all streets in Leesburg and in Nacke Addition, east of town, and Rowland Addition, west of Peoples State Bank. Those residents who would like to help by placing candles 10 to 12 feet apart along the street by their properties may pick up the materials at the town hall on Saturday, Dec. 20, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. After these are all in place by 2 p.m. on Sunday, a set-up crew will place remaining candles along the streets. The candles will be lighted at 5:45 and will all be available for viewing by residents and visitors by 6 p.m. as they light up the town with street lights off. Members of the Warsaw High School brass ensemble will be playing Christmas carols as they stroll through streets in the uptown area. Leesburg Merchants and Business Association members are again sponsoring the Candleria and will be donating 1,200 cookies, coffee and cocoa for the open house at the town hall from 6 to 9 p.m. in addition to

In scene six the shepherds will visit the Christ Child. This will include the reading of Luke 2:16-19 and group singing of “What Child Is This.” Candles will then be lighted, the choir will sing “Silent Night” and a prayer will be offered by Rev. Smith or Rev. Mendenhall. Scene seven is called, “The Rejoicing,” and will include the reading of Luke 2:20 and the group singing of “Joy To the World.” This will be followed by the benediction. All are invited to visit the town hall for refreshments until 9 p.m. Christmas program for UMW Christmas was the program of the/North Webster United Methodist Women’s Rebekah Circle membrs who met December 10, in the home of Helen Hoy. Thelma Sponsellor was her cohostess. Assorted cookies, egg nog, coffee and tea were served. First carolers? Who were the first Christmas carolers? — the angels! Carols did not become popular until the 14th century. They were joyful, simple, memorable songs with words in the common tongue. The strong meaning of the carols has resounded down through the years. Emigrants brought carolsinging to the New World; “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” and “O Come All Ye Faithful” acquired their modern form in the middle of the last century, with “O Little Town of Bethlehem", “We Three Kings,” and “Away in a Manger,” composed in America at about the same time Carolers sing to nursing home residents, for charity, or just down the street for the enjoyment of doing it for others. Long may the carolers sing!

'Silent Night' lives on

Most everyone has heard of how the most popular carol in the world was probably created when it was discovered on Christmas Eve that the organ’ s bellows were eaten through either by mice or rust. Now a song must be sung to be accompanied not by the organ.by the organ but by the guitar. Quickly the words of “Silent A straight course It is not safe to pilot on feelings My Bible is my instrument; fly ing on the Bible’s instructions, acting on its reading, my plane keeps a straight course If I pilot on my feelings, I could make dangerous mistakes. — Carrie ten Boom
