Warsaw edges Warriors by two at Goshen Relays

GOSHEN — Wawasee and Warsaw swimmers, at the start of the season, were expected to battle for the Northern Lakes Conference championship. That still should happen, but later. However, both schools tasted a little of the competition last weekend when Warsaw nipped the Warriors, 92-90, in the Goshen Relays. Following the two Northern Lakes Conference teams were Penn and Concord, tied for third with 84 points, Goshen in fourth with 50 points, and North Wood bringing up the bottom with 36 points. The relay championship went down to the last event — the 400 individual medley. • In the race for blue ribbon, the Warriors needed a good swim to overtake the Tigers. A first place would give the Warriors the victory in the relays. But this time around, the Warriors fell short of victory. Penn, which finished tied for third with Concord, won the final event, nipping the Warriors by less than one second. Warsaw placed fourth in the event, but still, two points ahead of Wawasee “We thought we were racing Warsaw in the final event for the win.” said Wawasee’s Tim Caldwell. “But in relays, you never know. cond, we thought we had it won, but we didn’t.’’ Penn’s final time, a 3:58.77 clocking just edged the Warriors’ 3:59.53 time. Warsaw’s fourth place time slipped to 4:05.13. Even though Wawasee failed to win the relays, it swam as best as could be expected. The Warriors were without one of its top swimmers, Mark Rich. “W’e swam well, but still lost,” said Caldwell. “I told the kids that we could not do anything about his absence .. ybu have to dance with the one that brings you.” Although the Warriors lost a valuable swimmer. Caldwell emphasized the teams loss was not a result of the absent swimmer. “I knew we had a chahce at winning,” added Caldwell. “But I also knew that they wouldn't let us just walk in, then out (referring to an easy victory)." Although the Warriors finished a close second, they were able to win one event — the crescendo relay. Meanwhile, the Warriors finished second in five events. Wawasee’s runners-up places included the 200 freestyle relay; 400 individual medley; 200 breaststroke; 200 butterfly; and 200 backstroke. At the outset. Warsaw took the early lead. But the Warriors caught the Tigers when

The only event the Vikings were able win was the 100 yard backstroke. Scott Beery finished in 1:01.4, nearly two seconds better than the Warriors’ Paul Morel. But that’s all Tippecanoe Valley could win. Wawasee’s 200 medley relay team, consisting of Steve Rozow, Scott Rozow, Matt Fry back and Brad Smith easily won the initial event of the night. From there. Mark Rich won the

Wawasee pins 19th ranked Goshen

GOSHEN — After losing four of its first five individual matches, the Wawasee grapplers answered the pleas of first-year coach Dave VanLue in registering wins in six of the final eight tilts to down 19th-ranked Goshen, 39-23. Tuesday evening. “This was an especially sweet victory for me, having never defeated a John Dechant (Goshen coach) team in my (five) years at Fairfield,’’ said an elated Dave VanLue, Wawasee’s first-year coach. Considered to be the toughest team in the Northern Lakes Conference, Goshen was knocked from the top by a scrappy Warrior team — which now appears to be the early favorite to capture the NLC crown. Opening the match with a pin of Wawasee’s Kip Goebel in 24 seconds, 98 pound Trung Nguyen seemed to have the Redskins on the right track early. But Mike Noel interupted the Goshen parade with a win in the 105 weight class (a 5:36 technical fall

over Jim Honey). Still, the momentum continued to sway Goshen's way. Three Warriors were scalped of victory, with Kevin Lepola being edged 7-6 in the 112 weight class by Keith Whittern; Eliseo Roa falling 10-5 to Jody Miller, and Shawn Jones dropping a 10-4 decision to 126-pounder Andy Ecklebarger It was then that the Warriors went on the war path, soundly defeating the next five opponents enroute to the decisive win. In the 132 weight class Bob Doerr shut out Kent Schooley, in what VanLue termed as the finest performance of the night. “Doerr was definitely the wrestler of the day , ” the Wawasee mentor said. Brett Traviolia, making his first appearance this season, followed with an 18-8 win over Jim Bechler in the 138 weight class. Jeff Welborn continued Wawasee’s dominance as the 145 pounder pinned his opponent in 36 seconds — after the Redskin regular (Jeff Mirer) failed to

O’Connor, at 6-4, leads the Tigers with a 12.5 scoring average and nearly eight rebounds a contest. Meanwhile, Sands, a 6-1 senior, scores at a 12.2 clip.
