School board considers five superintendent applicants
By MARK W EINSTEIN Staff Writer
The Wawasee Community School Corporation, holding its first of two meetings in December, breezed through its agenda with little difficulty Tuesday, Dec. 9. During the meeting, the school board officials received information concerning the progress of the superintendent screening committee. According to Bill Little, Wawasee School Board President, the committee ended its preliminary function last week by narrowing the 21-applicant field to five. Interviews are expected to take place this week, although that does not guarantee a decision will be made as quick. "The screening committee has asked that no names be released. ' said Little, following the meeting. "And I have to respect that request. They have done an outstanding job, I think they deserve my backing.” In other action at the meeting, the board accepted Dr. Howard Hull’s recommendation to continue the services of Barton and Coe. architects from Fort Wayne, and attorney Robert Reed. Both positions, architect and attorney, are up for reconsideration with three weeks remaining in this calendar year. "Bob Reed’s performance this past year has been as good as I could have hoped for," said Hull when recommending the Syracuse attorney. "We have no reason not to recommend him. ”

Dear Editor: Anti-Communist freedom fighters in Mozambigue are one step closer to establishing a prowestern government since their rebel group controls eight of the 10 Mozambigue provinces. It has been reported a Soviet air transport accident has killed Marxist ruler. Samora Machel. His death has made it possible for Mozambigue to take its nation back from the clutches of the „Soviets. It should now gain the Issue swayed ‘many voters Dear Editor: Regarding our close U.S. Representative race. Apparently Ward swayed many voters by standing and talking in front of factories, which had moved or closed. W ard swayed voters even though he offered no possible solution whatsoever, and we knew little about him. Could lask. these voters, have you ever corresponded with Representative Hiler regarding this problem 9 Couldn’t a child stand in front of a closed factory and say what Ward said? To me it's a little frightening. It would appear the devil himself could bring up a vote-getting issue and have a good chance of being elected. May I remind these voters, we had this problem, when we had a Democrat representative. At this time we had several ’other major problems. Such as: immorality was on the rise; our national defense deterioration; high inflation. high interest rates, high unemployment, and a phony oil shortage. W’e have had a Democratic-controlled House for many years; what have they done in solving this problem? According to the Congressional Legislative Report, a report on key moral issues on our U.S. Representatives’ and Senators’ voting record. Representative Hiler scored 100. His voting record shows me that he’s against abortion on demand. He believes in: religious freedom, a return to traditional morals, a strong defense, handgun rights, stopping communist aggression, protecting the public from AIDS, holding the line on big government spending ; and taxes. By the voting record of most of your National Democrats, they are in opposition to most of the aforementioned; many support homosexual right, also. A good job is very important. Although to a professing Christian, and/or traditional moral person, shouldn’t stopping the slaughtering of the unborn, returning our country back to traditional morals, including returning God and the Bible to the public schools, stopping the spread of pornography, in magazines, television, etc., by enforcing our obscenity laws, our religious freedom be at least as important? I believe we have much more to fear from our national Democrats, along with jobs, by most of their voting records! By being swayed by one or two issues, do we really deserve the freedoms which we enjoy??? Chauncey L. Bennett
Reed, present at the meeting, has served as the school corporation’s attorney since 1963. He will continue with the same retainer fee, SBOO, that he is presently being paid. “I think he did a fine job in preparing us with our court dates,’!’ said Little, in reference to the school’s involvement in the Kenneth Webster situation. “I have nothing but admiration for him.” I The Fort Wayne architect firm. Barton and Coe, also, had little Agent orange committee to meet The Indiana Agent Orange Committee has announced a public meeting to be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, in the Indiana War Memorial Auditorium, 431 North Meridan Street, Indianapolis. The meeting, according to State Chairman Gary Porter of Anderson, will be to announce legislative proposals the agent orange committee will submit to the General Assembly. Maude Devictor, a former veterans administration employee who was the inspiration for the nationally televised novel “Unnatural Causes." Members of the Indiana Agent Orange Committee have been investigating the claims by Hoosier veterans that their health, as well as the health of their children, has been affected by exposure to dioxin, a by-product contained in the Vietnam War chemical defoliant agent orange.

recognition and assistance of the US government. President Reagan sent Michael Gorbachev home empty handed with no promise of any delay in deployment of the SDI. Mr. Gorbachev rejected any testing of the SDI outside the laboratory even for a 10-year moratorium showing his envious anger and distrust of the USA SDI peace shield. It would be great if the Soviets could develop and deploy the SDI first so they are trying to weaken our Congress on all support of Reagan’s SDI peace shield and thus delay its completion by getting the leftist and liberal congressmen to fail to appropriate the money for the SDI to be developed. If the report is true that there are yet some 4,000 Soviet diplomats, journalists and business agents, many with KGB spy qualifications capable of conveying military and MFG secrets to the Soviets, then we should arrest, jail, try, and expel all that are proven to be anti-USA or proSoviet attempting to overthrow our government. The Sentinel has reported the Soviets have already deployed their own SDI by use of a ground based complex radar system. Congress is now singing the defense bills which will haunt the political arena for the next generation. The defense index is based on their voting support for MX missile SDI appropriations, aid to freedom fighters in Nicargua, Angola, or any place else in the world. The Afghans expose the Soviet Air Force weakness. Among their problems are: Numerous helicopter gun, ships are grounded for lack of parts and lack of skilled repair crews. Fuel shortages because of quantities of alcohol gqing into boot leg liquor. Soviet pilots and

trouble gaining the nod for another year of service to the corporation. “We have been able to work very closely with them, ” said Hull, stating his reasons for rehiring the firm. “They know what they are doing, and we chn trust them. And we are presently in a project with them. ” Two Grants For 1987 The board also received information from Hull of two grants the school corporation will receive this upcoming year. The first grant, an SBOO provision written by Ron Corson, Wawasee High School, is designed to teach students how to better present themselves when searching for a job, how to set up a budget, and other economic functions. Corson will teach the class, while Richard Welborn’s classes will join in. The other grant, a $17,000 gift, is designed to better equip teachers in the classroom. Dr. Ken Dunn, a well known speaker on this subject, will come to Wawasee High School and address the teachers, who in turn, will train other teachers. The grant was written by former Wawasee School Corporation Superintendent Webster, and will take place during the first part of January, 1987. Os the $17,000, Dunn will get his travel expenses paid for, around $2,500. After that, Connie Bailey who will oversee the instruction, will receive the same figure as Dunn. The remaining money will pay seven teachers, each $1,000; and substitute teachers who replace the full-time instructor
their trainees are ill prepared to make responsible decisions under stress. However, the Soviets have been successful in supplying Sam-T anti-air craft missiles which have downed some American air craft at 3,000 yards. President Reagan s vision of deploying a space shield to protect our nation and future generations from Soviet nuclear attacks or black mail depends on our American grass-roots support of our SDI success. Unless we Americans act to educate others, the powerful arms control lobby will kill our much needed SDI. I suggest all believers in our free country's with its Christian values should join the High Frontier. SDI camp, and help our president with all conservatives to keep America from becoming victims of Soviet slavery. Wawasee School Corporation Business Manager Roger Kryder informed the board that the property will cost the corporation $10,500. However, the sale was approved by the Indiana Department of Education. It will be financed through the cumulative building fund. Os the bottom line figure; $6,500 of the money is for the actual land. The remaining $4,000 is for site improvements, including lights for the baseball field. The field was purchased from the Commodore Corporation. The field has already seek

some improvements — thanks to the Kiwanis Club. A new fence for the field has been installed, and ‘moon dirt’ placed on the infield. The board also received Tax Anticipation Warrant bids, which were opened by Little. However, the issue was tabled, in order for Kryder to research the matter further. At eye level, the Merchant National Bank and Trust, Indianapolis, had the lowest bid. However, the American Fletcher National Bank of Chicago was very close. Only two local banks participated in the bids, the State Bank of Syracuse, and First National Bank of Warsaw. > In final matters, the board approved all of its claims, the extracurricular reports, and the financial reports, as of November 20.
A second meeting for December will take place next Tuesday evening, Dec, 16, at the central office.

(Continued from page 4) RINKERBUILT BOATS walked off with top laurels in boat races held recently at Lake Havasu and Parker, Arizona, according to Paul Beezley, seen in his 25-h.p. Rinkerbuilt boat in the photo accompanying this column. Competing with Beezley were Jan and John Rinker, Dr Bill Meyers, and Jerry Rinker of Houston, Texas, all expert racers. They returned home last Wednesday, proud of their showing. Beezley said, “Don’t leave out Jill (his wife); she was scorer.” John Rinker is owner of the Syracuse boat-building firm.

Need little water Because growth slows or stops in winter months, most plants will require less water and little if any, fertilizer.
In the Parker race, with 80 entries, Beezley won first place in what was billed as five-hour endurance mini grande prix class, with Jerry Rinker, only minutes behind, taking second place. Beezley said the race was finally called due to rough water after 24 hours. His average speed was 42 mph, including pit stops. Dr. Meyers flipped his boat, but Jan Rinker won sixth place. At Lake Havasu on Friday a week ago, with 57 boats entered, Beezley won first place in a 15-minute heat Scheduled for two hours, it was called due to bad weather. Jerry Rinker won a second and Dr. Meyers won third place.
