Prairie Heights next Wawasee foe
Wawasee’s boys’ basketball team, amidst one of its best starts in recent history, hope to remain unbeaten when it hosts Prairie Heights’ Panthers Saturday evening. [Wawasee’s best start, recently, was in 1983-84 when the Warriors went 5-0. In Saturday’s matchup, both teams, Wawasee and Prairie Heights have a lot of similarities, in terms of size and coaching. But, Prairie Heights’ offense resembles Wawasee’s as much as night resembles day. The contest between the Panthers, 2-1, and Wawasee, 3-0, appears to be an interesting matchupq Both teams are relatively short in stature, although the Panthers have a slight edge in height, x However, the Panthers, according to first-year Panther coach, Tim Holcomb, have little team speed — Wawasee’s strong point. In fact, the Panthers’ plan on walking the ball upcourt when attacking the offensive side of the floor. “We will walk the ball upcourt all the time,” said Holcomb. “We know Wawasee has a lot of speed and because of that, we don’t want to play their style of basketball.” However, the Warriors’ defense is expected to put pressure on the ball with a variation of defenses to force the Panthers into an faster tempo. If this happens, Wawasee should be able to run past the Panthers with its potent running game. Still, the key to the contest, obviously, will be Prairie Heights’ ability to slow down Wawasee’s fast break. However, that might not be at factor since Wawasee has slowly developed a quality halfcourt offense. The play of junior Fred Steffen could be the turning point in the game, IF, Wawasee’s streaking offense is slowed to a walk. With Steffen coming into his own last week at Mishawaka 'scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds), along with the perimeter shooting from Tim Mangas, Nathan Rhoades, and Matt Dick, Prairie Heights could be in for a long night in Syracuse. However, the Panthers have some weapons of their own. Senior Dan Flaharty, a 6-5 center, provides Prairie Heights with scoring punch and senior leadership. The center, averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds a game, is expected to carry much of the Panthers’ offensive burden against the Warriors.

“Flaharty is a very good player. He is solid in the middle, and likes to bang the boards,” said Holcomb. “He’s probably our best scoring threat this season.” But, just because the Panthers have only one player averaging in double digits, you can’t count them out. Holcomb has six additional seniors and four juniors that make remainder of the squad. Todd Gerbers, a 6-3 junior and 6-2 Lance Dafforn provide adequate size inside for the visitors. Along with the Panthers’ inside strength, they also have four seniors that handle the ball in the backcourt. In a close game, the Panthers’ senior leadership could pay dividends — as it all ready has. “So far this season, the senior leadership has been very important to us,” admitted Holcomb. “It paid off last week in our win at Leo. Experience is very important to a basketball team.”
Whitko claims state title
INDIANAPOLIS - For Whitko’s football team, the season ended just they way it was planned. The Wildcats, ranked second in Class 2A, used three first-half touchdowns and an stingy defense to capture its first state football championship, 26-0, over Tell City. Friday, Nov. 29, in the Indianapolis Hoosier Dome. • The key to Whitko’s easy title game victory was its defense. Unofficially, the Wildcats yielded 76 yards in total offense to the Marksmen. Meanwhile, Whitko mustered 265 yards, 248 coming on the ground. Whitko, after stopping Tell City on its first possession, marched into the end zone for the game winning touchdown. On the TD play, quarterback Mark Kline connected with Scott Striggle on a nifty 14-yard strike. The Wildcats added insurance points minutes later, thanks to their defense. Two plays following Whitko’s initial score, Bryan Sherwin intercepted a Marksmen pass and returned the ball to Tell City’s 16. From there, the Wildcats moved to the goal line, where Jeff Larson scored the TD. Larson added another Whitko touchdown, while Joey Busz cap-

ped the Wildcats’ scoring with a six-yard plunge. In winning, Whitko finished the season with a perfect 14-0 record. In the Class 3A state title game, three North Wood turnovers enabled Indianapolis Cathedral to slip past North Wood’s Panthers, 12-0. Cathedral wasted little time in moving in for the game winning touchdown. After its first offensive series stalled at NorthWoods’ 13 yard line, they stopped the Panthers on three plays. After a short punt,-Cathedral moved 35 yards for the score. Robert Beatty capped the impressive drive with his threeyard TD jaunt. The game remained 6-0 until Cathedral capatalized on Nor thWood’s quick kick from its end zone. Setting up shop at its 29, Cathedral moved the distance in five plays. The final play, a 13-yard wingback reverse by Bob Brady, ended North Wood’s hopes for a state championship. Although the Panthers were shut out, they had two opportunities to score in the third period. But two fumbles, one at Cathedral’s four, and the other, at Indianapolis’ nine, cost the Panthers.

St. Francis stuns Grace, 70-69
WINONA LAKE - AU good things must come to an end. Unfortunately for the Grace Lancers’, its modest four-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday evening as St. Francis stunned the Lancers. 70-69, in overtime. It was the second time this season that these teams played, and went into overtime. Grace won the first meeting, 68-66, in Fort Wayne. But the ending was different this time around. Grace, now 4-2, trailing St. Francis by three, 62-59, with 20 seconds remaining in the contest, attempted to work a play that would even the score — or possibly win it.But with five seconds left, Joe Graham, who paced the Lancers with 16 points, canned a threepoint shot from the perimeter, sending the game into overtime. “We called timeout with 15 seconds left to set a play,” said Grace assistant coach Jeff Kowatch. “But it didn’t work, and Graham nailed the threepointer.” In the extra session, both teams traded three-point baskets, and the lead until St. Francis took charge in the waning seconds But Grace still had a chance to win the game. Looking for the winning field goal, the Lancers came up empty on two separate occasions. Paul Zeltwanger. formerly of Penn.
