Second-hand smoke is a health hazard
When was the last time anyone sat in a smoke-filled room with his/her eyes watering, a horrible headache and dry throat? This second-hand smoke reduces the function of the small airways in a person’s lungs, just the same as if he/she smoked one to 10 cigarettes each day. In fact, second-hand cigarette smoke causes inflammation in the lung cells that leads to structural damage and death of those cells. Tobacco smoke contains more than 3,000 chemical compounds, many of which are toxic. These toxic chemicals partially burn the fiats in the lung cells. The partially burnt particles are called free radicals. And radical they are. They race around trying to hook on to other parts of the cell. This damages and destroys the cells. As free radicals increase, destroying the lung cells from smoky toxins, emphysema could develop. But that’s not the only problem. Evidence also points to the development of lung cancer in nonsmokers exposed to passive

smoke. One report showed the spouse of a heavy smoker had 3.5 times the risk for lung cancer compared to spouses of nonsmokers. Researchers have been studying how to trap and neutralize these destructive free radicals for many years. They’ve found that natural-source vitamin E neutralizes them most effectively, offering some protection to the lungs. Dr. Ching Chow at the University of Kentucky says vitamin E minimizes cell damage by offering protection from cigarette smoke toxins. A recent study from Ohio State shows that smokers have a lower level of vitamin E in the fluid of their lung cells. And studies from Johns Hopkins and Louisiana State University confirm that a low blood level of vitamin E appears to be a predictor of lung cancer. People get vitamin E from either food or dietary supplements. Most vitamin E in food comes from vegetable oil, like

salad dressing. As for dietary supplements, vitamin E can be made from either a natural source or a petrochemical, nonfood source, and apparently the body can tell the difference. Findings from a St. Louis University research study show that the bodies use natural-source vitamin E 36 percent more effectively. Research has just begun in earnest on cancer and vitamins. The research on natural-source vitamin E offering some protection looks promising. However, it has been estimated by the National Cancer Institute that 80-90 percent of the cancer incidence rate in the US is caused by environmental factors, of which tobacco smoke ranks as number one on the cancer-causing list. Until there is a smoke-free society, massive lung damage and disease will continue.
