It happened ... in Syracuse
10 YEARS AGO, NOV. 24,1976 The proposed zoning ordinance for the town of Syracuse (Project Indiana P-1073-28), prepared by Latz Associates of Fort Wayne, is in for some rough sledding, if a public meeting held last night at the Syracuse town hall is any indication. The Syracuse plan commission, chaired by secretary Joe Gray in the absence of president Bill Beemer, held its meeting before a standing-room-only crowd of local and area citizens. Mrs. Bill Eyer was the hostess for the November 17 meeting of the Twilighters Bunco Club and Mrs. Philip Strieby was the cohostess. Attending were eight members and five guests, Mrs. Gerald Bitner, Mrs. Paul Stouder, Mrs. Dallas Kitson, Mrs. Harold Gallahan and Mrs. Lawrence Th waits. PLANNING TRADE SHOW TRIP — Deb Wiggins. Greater Warsaw Chamber of Commerce/KDI. Warsaw mayor Jeff Plank, and Kosciusko County Councilman Fred Gilliam are pictured planning the strategy for the area’s first international marketing effort.
County represented at London trade show
Kosciusko County was represented at a trade show and tour in London. England, last week, by Deb Wiggins, Greater Warsaw Chamber of Commerce/KDI executive. Local community officials were invited to accompany state delegates on the first prospecting tour of its kind for Indiana. According to Chamber/KDI officials. officials at the state level, through the Indiana Department of Commerce, have been encouraging international investments in the state, along with their sophisticated local industryprogram for the past two years. They added that the decision to send local representation followed a great deal of discussion by theKDI board. “I think it is a great honor to be asked to represent the state and particularly our region on the state's first prospecting trip of this kind,” noted KDI president Tom Earhart. “It says a lot for our program which is only about three years old. It is an opportunity we must not pass up.” Other Indiana areas to be represented at the trade show Eyes have it The results are in and the “eyes” have it! According to International Wildlife magazine, an experiment conducted by Japan’s All-Nippon Airlines found that painting large eyes on the engines frightened birds away from the plane, reducing the number of “strikes.” In the past year, the airline recorded only one bird strike per engine on the painted 747 s while the unpainted 767 s were struck 22 times per engine. The airline is preparing to paint eyes on all of their commercial jets. While this may startle the birds, it probably will save their lives.

Mrs. J. M. Rapp, assisted by Mrs. Deloss Weaver, with 18 members present on November 17. The Warriorette swim team completed their season last Monday night defeating a tough Penn team 96-77. Although no records were broken, the Warriorettes went all-out to achieve their one major goal — to beat Penn. Falling on Thanksgiving this year will be the 92d birthday of Arnold Pfingst, 16 North Shore Dr., Syracuse. 20 YEARS AGO, NOV. 23,1966 Plans for a community
and tour were Bloomington. Lafayette, South Bend, Columbus and representatives from northeastern Indiana. The scheduled included a oneday trade show, followed by individual calls on companies showing an interest in making an investment somewhere in Indiana. According to Wiggins, “Our area is blessed with a more than average number oi industries involved in international trade. Coupling this with the fact that the United States is experiencing more competition with the world rather than domestically means that we must become more familiar with this situation. We will then be able to make our own opportunities in the international market and take advantage of those that come our way.” Chamber/KDI officials say they hope this prospecting endeavor will “provide a new dimension to the industrial development and marketing opportunities for Kosciusko County and its existing industrial base,”

Secret weapon Watch out America’s Cup hopefuls — the Australians may have a secret weapon — kangaroos! While kangaroos have long been regarded as “natural athletes” for their leaping and boxing abilities, they are also great swimmers. According to Ranger Rick magazine, kangaroos have been spotted swimming across rivers and even in the ocean! A “roo” swims with its head and back above water, pumping its strong hind legs one at a time. So that’s what those Aussies have under their yacht this year!
