Wawasee’s boys’ basketball team is one in transition — and hopefully, will continue to be throughout the season. The Warriors are a team that would like to press their opponents defensively and use an up-tempo, transition style offense. But whether Wawasee can accomplish both, remains to be seen. Wawasee, 9-15 a year ago under John Wysong’s coaching, look to improve that mark with first - year coach Gary Goshert. Still, the road to a winning record has developed slowly — only because the Warriors are learning a new On the cover Wawasee’s athletic pride is shown on the cover as Brian Rensberger and Ann Vitaniemi stand beside a statue of Chief Wawasee. system. “It’s tougher on the kids to adjust than the coaches,” said Goshert about the switch in coaches. “But they are adapting well. It might take a little while, but we’ll come together. But, in order for the Warriors to become a good basketball team, Goshert feels the team needs to improve in certain areas. The Warriors must improve their passing, particularly the bounce pass, and develop an inside game. “In order for us to be a good basketball team, we need to be able to put the ball inside,” said Goshert. “Then, when we do that, we need to do something positive with it. We can’t depend on our perimeter shooting to carry us. ” Unfortunately,, the Warriors are not blessed with a great deal of size. Juniors Fred Steffeivgmd John Erasure are Wawasee’s tallest, both standing 6-3. Adding additional size to Wawasee’s

frontcourt are Brian Rensberger, a 6-2 junior; Mike Eastman, 6-1 senior; and Brett Harter, a 6-i junior. Still, the Warriors have little experience in the frontcourt. Only Steffen is a returning starter from the group. Nevertheless, Goshert feels his inside players will add an extra dimension to Wawasee’s game. ‘ ‘What we want to see happen is three or four of our inside players come through and contribute in a positive way,” said Goshert. “We need to be efficient inside. Then, others will respect our inside game, and our perimeter game will be more effective. ” The play of Tim Mangas, like the inside game, is very important to Wawasee. Mangas, who scored in double figures in every game, except one, last season, adds leadership and ability at Nevertheless, Wawasee’s season can’t rest on Mangas’ shoulders alone. “We do not want to put all the pressure on Mangas, or anyone else from the outside,” said Goshert. “Mangas is intelligent and a good shooter, but we need consistency from our inside game. Balance is important. ’ ’ Another dimension Mangas brings to Wawasee is his drive to become an all-around player. According to the first-year coach, Mangas has worked hard on this facet of his game. “I think Tim will be a good defensive player for us,” said

Goshert. “He has good quickness and is an intelligent player. Joining Mangas in the backcourt are four players with a variety of abilities. Darin Atwood, 6-0 junior, and Nathan Rhoades, a 6-0 senior, provide the Warriors with experience. Both have adequate jump shots, and are good passers. Meanwhile, Matt Dick, a 5-11 sophomore, should also see plenty of playing time. Dick is a natural scorer, although, with his passing skills, is a team player. James Braggs, a move-in from Whites Institute (Wabash), serves as the floor leader. The 5-9 senior is extremely quick, and has a great desire to improve his game. With Wawasee’s inexperience in the frontcourt, the Warriors’ backcourt could. feel pressure from the outset. But that should not stop the Warriors from scoring a lot of point. “I think we will be a good shooting team,” declared

Goshert. “We shouldn’t have any troubles sticking the ball in the hole.” But its stopping the opponents that worry Goshert. “We need to play good, solid defense,” informed Goshert. “We are not a team that will roll over people. Blocking out and rebounding will be very important, and that takes self-discipline. ’ ’ As in the past, Wawasee is expected to play a lot of man-to-man defense. But, Goshert won’t live and die by that defense. “You have to play the type of defense that is advantageous to our team,” declared Goshert. “It doesn’t matter what defense you play. Whatever defense stops our opponent, that’s the one we will use.” Wawasee opens its season Friday, Nov. 21, at Carroll. A year ago, the Warriors defeated Carroll by a narrow margin. Following its season-opener, Wawasee will open its home schedule Tuesday, Nov. 25, with Fairfield.
