IBv MARK HUFFMAN ' Staff Writer Taking over a role reserved for the strong willed, Wabash native Dallas Winchester Jr stepped into Milford Monday under the scrutiny of the public eye when he formally took over the position of utilities superintendent. Profile Hired by the town board after a reviewal of numerous resumes and more than 10 interviews, Board President Jean Treesh feels they’ve selected ttie right man for the job and Winchester couldn’t be more in agreement. ‘‘l’m looking forward to the challenge of being successful — the town has operated well in the past, but it’s growing and there are things that need to be done,’’ he says, reviewing many of those things for the town board at his first meeting Monday night. Son of Wabash Mayor Dallas Winchester Sr., the younger protege has become accustomed to being under the surveillance of his peers. "Because of my father’s position, I was always expected to do a 5 good job by the citizens — but that’s helped make me more of a leader than a follower,” he says, noting his rapid climb from laborer on the Wabash

Street Department and Wastewater Treatment Plant for three years to his current status. A 1983 graduate of Vincennes (Ind.) University. Winchester obtained an associates degree in public relations before beginning his push to the top. “Public relations is a wide field and I thought it would help with the administrative skills needed at the wastewater department, which is more proies sionalized than many people realize, while I also enjoy working with the public,” he remarks. A class II operator’s license for wastewater treatment was also obtained by Winchester after classes last year at Ivy Tech. “There are a lot of state procedures and lab procedures involved with the wastewater section of the department,” he says, noting that the variety of the utilities superintendent position lent to his application after he heard about the job through a trade periodical. Working with assistant utilities superintendent Randy Veach and laborer Daniel VanLue, Winchester hopes to form a fraternity that fits Milford’s needs. “I’ll do my best to make sure there is a good working relationship wi'jiin the department and hope that anytime a community member has a complaint he or she will contact me so we can work toward a solution.” he states. Still being baptized into Milford,'Winchester and his wife. Elizabeth, live in an apartment off James Street with their one-year old daughter. Brittany. “We hope to move into a house this winter and are working to become more familiar with the people, who've been very friendly thus far,” he says, adding, “I’m adjusting to the smaller community’s ways — I just hope that they can adjust to mine as well.”
